Power steering problems

Hi,
I have a 89' maxima and my power steering has gone nuts. It works fine, except that I feel like driving an old vehicle with manual steering. The steering doesn't seem to be getting any power. There are no noises or any jerks. The fluid level is filled to the brim. What could have gone wrong? I wanted to get some information before I take it to a mechanic. Can I drive it in this condition or is it better to get it fixed? Please help!
Thanks
