Turbos turbos turbos, which one?????

Ok. I am just about ready to purchase a turbo kit. Now, the question comes down to, which turbo do I really want? I know all about the compressor maps and all that good stuff, but which turbo is IDEAL for our engine. Many people will say, well, do you want a drag car, road-race car, etc etc. To be completely honest, I want the best of both worlds. I want to have the "punch" when I floor it on the highway, but I also want to have that "beast" when I am at the track. Now, excluding ball-bearing turbos, what turbo is best for our 3.0 liter engines?

And also, what exact compressor/turbine trims are the best as well (ie .63/.59)?

Thanks all.....

It all depends on where you want the most power. T3/T04E will give you great low and mid-range power compared to a T4/T04E, but the hybrid will not give you the same top end power.

From my experience, the T4 turbo at 10 psi beats out the SC at 11 psi at all RPM points (maybe not below 2000).

If you want near immediate punch, go for a T3/T4 hybrid (members say it spools by 2k and full boost by 2.5k). My BB T4 spools by 2k and full boost is at 3.4k.

Compressor and turbine trims will depend on your driving style. I like high end power because I don't want to be spinning in the low RPM, so I choose 60 trim compressor and P-trim turbine (.81 A/R).

Thanks Kev. So basically, if I go for the T3/T4 hybrid, and get a larger compressor and turbine trim, it will yield a higher gain in the high end? That does make sense. Yes, I will loose some low end, but hey, the high end is good, especially dealing with traction issues.....

I am working on a place for powder coating and ceramic coating.

If I can help in any way let me know, BUT you do know more than I

I personally wouldn't go with anything less than a 60 trim on the compressor side. I don't know what the highest trim and A/R for the turbine is for a T3... but go with something between .6 and .7 A/R.

After researching

For the best of both world with 3.0L motor I say

T04E
.58 on center turbine V trim
.70 compressor O trim

The turbine A/R may be small, but the T4 is a larger turbo family to begin with.

Of course BB will make it that much nicer

Thanks for the reply. Are you sure this would work best on the straight T4?

Is there a .70 compressor O trim for a T04E? .58 on center V-trim?

Do you mean T04B V trim compressor wheel instead? .58 on center T4 housings come in N, O, P, and Q... I don't believe they make a V.

How do we know a T3/T4 works best?
How do we know a T4 works best?
How do we know a _____ works best?
We don't, it's all about trial and error. Untill someone tries different turbo and trims/wheels plus dyno it's all a guessing game. One of our member have dyno a couple different trims, he went as far as installing a T4/60-1

Maybe I got my trims backward, I was going off the top of my head. Let me re-research my info to make sure.

Exactly... it's all about one's driving preferrence.

I think you did, Mike. Too many configurations/possibilities makes research

Yes I have a T4/60-1. I find it more fun than my T4/TO4E. I probably wouldn't go larger than that though. If you like really quick off the line stuff, then a T3/TO4E might be nice for you. There are hundreds (I kid you not) of combinations of exhaust, compressor, trims, A/R, wheels you can try. I don't think anyone can tell you the absolute best without investing serious $$$ into trying them. Some you can calculate of course and get into ball parks for efficiency and how much power you would like etc but no one can tell you your own tastes! If you call turbonetics or some other T/C company and give them details of your engine, power etc ... they should give you a recommendation. T4/TO4E was the one recommended to me but that is one turbocharger company.
