Simple Turbo Question

I've been debating forced induction for awhile. I completely understand supercharging, but I'm much more interested in turbos. The performance and customizability definitely outweigh the extra hassle.

Question is... is there an air-flow diagram I can look at to help me design an intercooled system?

I found this... but can't determine the flow.

Is there a site with good information as to the pros and cons of certain turbo configurations. (IE: oil return, MAF placement, BOV recirculation vs not... etc...

I'm mostly concerned with turbo choice. AR ratings, compressor size etc...

Thanks for the help!

If you can't understand the flow, I'd continue the research before jumping in. BTW, that's ALOT of unnecessary tubing just to retain the stock Y config IMHO.

It looked like a helluva lotta metal. My wife's GSX has MUCH less piping than that.

I'm most in awe of sx7r's setup. Do you have a writeup?

How would you suggest doing the downpipe to get the exaust to the turbo?

What I like about his (s7xr's) setup is that the type of intercooler he uses keeps the intake air away from the hot engine and exhaust manifold. Every other setup I've seen routes the cool air coming from the intercooler back over the front exhaust manifold, heating it back up a little. But the 180 degree turn the air has to make in the intercooler may produce a larger pressure drop than the straight through designs.

I got the intake part down but i need to know my options for the flow of the exaust. Anyone?

Quite the opposite, actually. The reason i went with the top to bottom intercooler was to combat pressure drop that you'd normally see in a side to side flow intercooler. The lower pressure drop from a top to bottom intercooler than a side to side is due to the following. Given the same frontal area on both types of intercoolers, the top to bottom intercooler has a significantly greater internal flow area because there are more tubes for the air to travel through which means less restrictions. Side to side intercoolers have fewer, longer tubes - meaning less internal flow area and larger pressure drop as a result. In this case, the direction of flow on the end tanks is not important because it's not a restriction and therefore does not cause a pressure drop.

You can also look at flow charts for specific intercooler cores. I don't know what everyone else is using, but according to Griffin, my intercooler is 90% efficient at 600cfm, which is almost right on with what i'm running right now. 14psi puts me at about 570cfm.
