EGT Probe Location

Ok I did alot of searching on this one. About 95% of the force-induction guys have there probe located at the reverse-y junction or close to the manifold to view the EGT reading. Currently, my probe is at the reverse-y junction.

So we did some test runs with the Vortech SFMU, and it shows a reading of 1500-1600F at WOT under 5psi and rising!!!! I was in 4th doing 115 at 5500rmps. We did the same run without SFMU and the same readings held. Not sure if the SFMU is faulty, but I was assuming the unit should keep the EGT reading below, say 1400F at WOT under boost. And please keep in mind, our Fuel Pressure gauge is not in place yet.

Also many of my Turbo-Charged BMW and Supra guys say, the probe should be located 6 inches away from Turbo on the down-pipe. I confirmed these measurments with Greddy and Apex and they agreed to the measurements.

So my question to you guys, is my EGT Gauge faulty?? Should the probe be located 6 inches from the Turbo on the down-pipe?? And Should the SFMU drop the EGT readings under-boost?? Also, what is the maximum limit on the EGT reading under-boost at 5psi roughly??

Probe should be UPSTREAM of the Turbo near the Exhaust Ports...

trust your EGT. your car is running lean. if your car is running rich, you will see the EGT stays and it will not rise. The faster it rises, the leaner your car is running. when I was running 20:1 AFR, the temperature hit 800 celcius before I hit 90mph from a 60mph rolling.

if your car pinging or detonating?

get the fuel pressure gauge install to see if your SFMU is working.

what kinda fuel pump are you using?

Thats just it, I'm not experincing any pinging or detonation.. And I'm using the stock fuel pump. I'll attach the fuel pressure gauge and see.

so you add a turbo and boost more air into the engine.

but you have stock pump which has a peak of 50psi and stock injectors that flow 240cc per minunte to your engine, which is perfect for NA application.

I think that explains your high EGT......

you are not boosting your fuel! you have an SFMU to restrict fuel retun. but you dont have a strong pump OR a larger injectors to deliver more fuel. You need a high flow pump like walbro to build up your fuel pressure.

I thought the stock injectors and fuel pump was enough to handle 5psi. Guess I was wrong. If I get the Walboro Fuel pump using the SFMU, should bring down my EGT readings??

nope, stock injectors and pump will not be able to handle 5psi of turbo boost.

even Stillen's SC has a pulley that gives 6 peak psi and it requires an additional fuel pump to deliver more fuel. Say you have adjust your SFMU to 8:1 and you are running 5psi of boost.....you should see 57psi of fuel on your fuel p. gauge. Stock pump cannot delivery more than 45psi of fuel, IIRC.

I dont know how that engine isnt blown yet... first no FMU, then lean EGT's....how much have you been driving it? Call it VQ power, but I am willing to bet it has sustained damage...

Wait hold up, your on stock pump only? no additional inline fuel pump and NO FMU? stop what you are doing and order a Walbro if you dont have and a FMU from Vortech or a sard or something before you detonate.

he has a "stand alone" (still not sure why these guys think it is a stand alone, just cause it has a built in FPR doent make it stand alone) SFMU but he didnt at one point. Also, with stock Fuel Pump the sfmu probably is not even doing anything. Who designed this kit again?.......

Listen guys. The car runs good. My motor is fine and there is nothing wrong with it. I'm not detonating nor am I pinging. My compression check is OK.

My EGT shows 1000-1200F when I'm cruising at around 75-80mph, not in boost. When in boost, it will climb steady to around 1300-1500F, by that point Im doing over 120+mph.. So yeah I'm leaning out up top. I help design my kit and there is still more I need to do at the moment.

I was under the impression at around 4-5psi that stock Fuel Pump and injectors can handle this load. It seems that I was wrong. The Maxima's Fuel pump and injector systems seems a bit weak. So yeah I'll beef up these systems next and keep tuning her until I get it right.

have you dynoed your car? did you see what AFR are u running? if you run a 11:1 all the way, then keep the stock pump and injector.

that's my number too and guess how lean my car is running.

it is weak. hook up the fuel pressure gauge and tell me if you see the persure goes anywhere near 60psi @ WOT

if you dont want to deal with the tank pump. get an inline pump and add it to the fuel feed line. close to the tank is better.

As far as dyno tuned, not yet. I do not know my AFR at the moment. So these facts are not yet known.

However, I did install my FP-Gauge today and believe me, it doesn't show 60psi during WOT. My idle is 36psi, cruising at 70-80mph shows 40-43psi and WOT shows 47psi and sits there. So yeah the motor is running lean under boost.

So I will be planning on using the 1995 300ZXTT injectors for now and the 255l Walboro Fuel-pump.

Thanks for the feedback.
