What are pintle caps...

What exactly do these little PITA's do? Are they 100% necessary? IE - if I had to install 1 injector without one, would it cause problems?

I'm wondering the same thing. I really don't see the need for them.

I asked the same thing on a local board I'm on (www.ubrf.org) and got the following response:

A pintle cap is just a rubber/plastic cap that goes over the injector pintle to keep dirt and other carbon etc from distorting the spray pattern, and eventually cloggingt the injector. No they aren't neccessary and sometimes when running dsm injectors in a turbo civic they fall off or are cracked, and to save them from falling into the motor we remove them. The injector just might not last as long or perform as good over time.
They don't physically protect the tip, and they don't look like they change the spray pattern, so that seems to make sense.

I just left them off. If I read or find the need for them, I'll pull the injectors, but I'm not too worried about it.

your stock injectors have the same exact caps use those if they are not damaged. I asked Mardigrasmax how did he replaced his caps on the 300Z injectors? He said soak your stock injector caps with WD-40 and then carefully work them out. Last night I finally got to removing some injectors out of a stock fuel rail. Talk about a PITA. I now see why all you guys keep a spare fuel rail. It is much easier to work the injectors out of the fuel rail. If you happen to strip the phillips head bolt and you have the fuel rail out of the car i used a reciprocal saw and made the stripped phillips head into a flat head bolt. The bolts finally came off.

What technique are you guys using to removing those stock injectors out of the fuel rail since they are pinched by the rubber O ring?

I just use a pair of vice grips and grab the "block" on top where the connector meets the injector. I twist and pull up at the same time. Hasn't failed me yet.

I've got 18 stock injectors (yes, 3 sets) and tried to take the pintle caps off of about 4 of them using every method I could think of. Nothing worked. They have a ridge in them that sits in a ridge on the injector tip. I couldn't figure out how to get those to seperate without cracking the cap.

I don't think I'll have problems without them.

Eric I have replaced a couple without having a pintle cap with no performance loss that I could detect. I am like you I tried a few ways with no success, so thats means they aren't really necessary.

As long as we all have our stories straight, let just run with that.
