Yep - being an Auto and SC'ed is only slightly faster than a NA 5spd (assuming stock pulley, of course)

5spd - then SC.

I Would Say Do The Supercharger First, Then If Your Still Not Happy Then Convertto Five Speed. But Personally I Prefer The Auto Much Faster Trust Me... I Dont Know About The Rest Of The Guys... But I Had Four Five Speeds.. 96 With S/c ...and Now I Have A 97 Auto That Will Tear Up A Five Speed If Any Doubt Come See Me. And Still Shifting Smooth

SC now with a 3.125 pulley, get a solid fuel managment set up (Cartech FMU, AEM FPR, and a S-AFC II) when your tranny blows up buy a built auto, then add nitrous. A five speed is not guaranteed not to break and many members have. A built auto does come with a warranty, would cost you about as much as a five speed swap, and once you get into high horsepower the auto will be faster.

Hows a auto tragic faster then a 5 speed have you seen some of the dyno numbers boosted autos put out? maybe you should do some research yourself before giving this man opinions vice facts.

Get a 5 speed youll enjoy the car when your boosted.

I love 5spd's as much as anybody on this page but it's not quite as big an issue for a torquey motor like the Maxima as compared to my Prelude which is an unreliable dog w/ the auto. Max1man got 278whp out of the 3.33 pulley on an auto which is pretty impressive. Jim pulled some sick numbers w/ his N20 auto which proves they are capable of performance.

Admittedly, the auto won't hold up under extreme conditions but neither will the manual and the auto is much better for basic cruising in traffic. Shadow's car I could care less since I'm too busy clutching the wheel.

Personally, I'd go super first since boost > auto tranny losses and you'd enjoy the S/C more. Besides if you up the boost too much and blow the auto, you're always open to swap then w/o wasting a perfectly good auto tranny.

Stock for Stock the Auto will lose. However once you start getting into the high hp range the longer gears of the auto are actually an advantage. That isn't to say that I am reccomending an auto to this guy because it will be faster (I doubt he is talking about running the kind of power that would make an auto faster) but more from an economical point of view.

Like I and Mishap said the five speed can and will fail too. Being that the price is about the same for a 5 speed swap (used five speed with no warranty, plus the headaches of the install) and a built auto (that is very quick and has a warranty, you already have the shell just drop it out-ship it-and bolt it back up) I would opt for the auto.

If you want go backwards, get the SCer and then get the 5 speed later. Any way you go you still have to beef up that tranny. You will need a good tranny cooler and a VB mod. Theres just no way out of it. Or leave your tranny as is and get at least a cooler until it croaks on you and then get a 5 speed swap.

I dont doubt you beat a 5 speed max. I believe it. You did not have to shift he did. You had the upper hand. I have not ran any fast autos what so ever. The fastest auto vehicles I raced were an LT1 with an empty bottle and a SCed Z28. Best be a fast shifter or they will romp on you.

know my cars they did tremendous work on them. and they' ll tell yo
go auto. vinny ten is currently running a turbo supra.. 3.5 in the 1/4.. auto
219 mph. can you f... with that. hmmmn check it out if you dont believe.

ummm, yeah 3.5@219??? .....doubt that!!!!!

and you have to unserstand that the auto being used in most high performance DRAG-ONLY cars(like this Supra you're talking about) are totally different from ANYTHING on your average everday auto street car...plain and simple as far as everyday street/strip import cars go 5spd OWNZ. auto = consisitencey, but in your average street car will never out do a 5spd as far as putting power to the ground

I am going to agree with him they do use mostly autos at professional drags. I dont know about the 3.5 in the 1/4, is that even possible?

Let me put my 2cents in... I have a 1995 Maxima... Before hand it was auto, now it's 5speed converted... In my opinion the autotragic give more speed up top... I belive the final gear is a bit longer than the five-speed.... However, the automatics loose a lot of power in the transmission, when it comes to putting down HP to the wheels... 5speeds on the other hand can produce more power to the ground especially with transmission mods like "Quife-diff" and Light-weight Flys...

Also the 5spd tranny can take more abuse than an Auto... In order for a Auto to last under-boosted driving conditions, you would either baby the tranny or spend a **** load of money re-enforcing it...

5spds are more fun to drive and takes more skill to master... Especially when it comes to mastering shiftpoint... There Pros and con, the debate is endless... The bottom line it is a matter of preference...

How does the auto give more speed up top?? Yes 4th gear in an auto is longer than a the 5-speed's 5th gear but in this case, longer gear mean slower acceleration because the tranny is dividing the torque by a greater factor. You can install a limited slip on an auto, because autos have differentials too. But what does that have to do with producing more power to the ground?

That is debatable. Some feel like the auto tranny is better suited to high-power applications because there is no actual mechanical link from the engine to the tranny. So instead of the whole tranny blowing if something goes wrong, it's just the TC. Either way with big, big power your gonna have to reinforce either tranny type.

It's a matter of what you intend to do with your car. Be a hardcore *****-to-walls drag racer, or a quick daily driver. But for low to moderate power levels (400HP) 5-speed owns.

1. How does the auto give more speed up top??
_______________________________________
Answer: The gearatios on the autos are longer and the final drive gear I belive is taller... The top speed should be higher... Getting there is a different ball game!

__________________________________________________ _______________
Answer: No debate with part of that statement, but longer gearing under boost will result in higher top speed with less shifting. The auto's shift point are a bit more consitant due to electronics.

__________________________________________________ ______________
Answer: Yes you can install a limited slip on an auto... But when it comes to installing a Quife, not possible with an auto at this time.. Also you cant compare a Maxima Auto LSD to a Quaife. As far as freeing up power... The auto's loose power in the transmission with Torque converter, Multiple clutches and TCM... This is the power lose!!! Manuals don't have Torque Converts, multiple clutch disk, and TCM.. Everthing is Direct-Drive... Straight up manual.

I understand why automatic transmissions have more drivetrain loss than manuals, but your statement about "limited slips and lightweight flywheels" threw me for a loop. And you can build an automatic tranny to have the same if not close to the same drivetrain loss as a manual FYI.

As for the top speed statement, I misunderstood. I thought you meant the an auto will accelerate harder up top due to the longer gears which makes absulutely no sense. Higher top speed?? Gotcha.

Sorry for the confusion in my prior statements... But with respect to the Auto tranny, building it close to spec to a manual, I don't think so?? Well it will cost plenty of money and again, with money anything is possible... As far as lsd... The best LSD/Torque-Biasing system is the quafie when it comes to a maxima... You must understand the OEM LSD for the Maxima has clutches wich can slip or get worn out resulting in power-loss. Quaife has no clutches... Everything is gear driven... There is no chance of slipage or wearness.. Power transfer is put down directly.

Lightwieght Flywheel is a plus. Some people say it shows no hp gains on dyno.. In my opnion, less rotational mass under accelaration is an increase in power resulting in higher-speeds... Keep in mine, for boosted people this will allow for faster spool-ups too.

I personally feel it's more economical to put the money into the 5spd than the auto... You invest 3000 to 4000+ into bullet-proofing an auto... God forbid that **** should encounter a failure... Rebuilding auto trannies are horribly expensive...

And to take it even futher... It would be sweet to install the 6spd tranny from the 3.5s into our 4Gens.. This of curse will be beneficial for boosted applications...

he has the fastest auto supra turbo. i meant 7.64 in the quarter
and 3.5 zero to sixty. i just used him as an example, that it doesnt make a difference if its a five or a auto.. its what you do to them...
plus i'd like to hear from boths sides some quarter mile times.. to
defend that statement... i just sit back and listen to you guys.. but i gaurantee.. bring me a five speed and it will be the hardest fight you ever had. plus is there anyone on this sight who's owned over five maximas .. im no amateur at this and can answer almost any question you have...i dream maxima ..thats why they call me c max.... and i own a co.. called max entertainment because i love em to deaf...
and im not gonna let a diff between an auto and a five change that .

i hope you are ready .. because if he beats both of us we will never live it down.. i hear he went to english town and put down 12 seconds..
in sept... the first time we raced i pulled on him three quarter of a mile
but he got me by a whole car length by the end of the mile... thats where the five speed made a difference... because i backed of the gas to tease him then swoosh i couldnt kickdown in time to pull off so i lost... this time .. we did it safely on a old airport strip in brooklyn..

Um dude, Vinny's car runs like 7's in the 1/4. Maybe it runs high 6's now, but I don't think it does yet.

High hp drag cars do run autos, but there are a multitude of reasons for that, and it's not for any of the reasons you think.

My friend has a 9 sec. Supra that runs a 3 spd. auto at the track. Off season, he puts a 6 spd. in it for the street. He runs the auto because

1.) The trans brake allows him to build boost off the line. Can't do that with a manual.

2.) No shifting which is good when you're car is that fast. Shifting 6 times in under 10 seconds is not fun. So the auto makes his times more consistent.

3.) And for his application, the auto has better gearing.

On a Maxima, the 5 spd. has better gear ratios and less power loss. Since you're not running the 1/4 in under 10 sec. in a Maxima, the shifting isn't as much of an issue. And mod for mod, you're not going to beat a 5 spd. in an auto. If you have more mods, then of course you'll win.

Wow!!! He did put some work into that Evo!!!! Well I won't back away from a challenge, if its done properly... But to tell you the truth 20psi with exstensive exhaust work on an AWD EVO will be difficult beat....
