Shreaded SC Belt. How to to install stock belt?
Shreaded SC Belt. How to to install stock belt?
Hey guys, My SC belt shredded last night as I was cruising down the highway @ about 60 mph.
Anyway my question is how do I do the following:
Obtain and REPLACE the stock belt (without SC)
Obtain and replace belt for 3.6 pulley.
I read through the stickey and saw no instructions on how to replace the stock belt.
Do I have to order these belts online or can I go to local auto store and pick them up?

oh, just feed the stocker right back onto the pulleys
the stock tensioner works.
i ran na most of the winter with my s/c mated to the timing chain cover
any autozone or pep boys should have the s/c belt.

Stock tensioner? Is that the technical name for what I call a belt?
Is the stock tensioner/belt also available at local auto parts store? Just go in and ask for a 1998 nissan maxima tensioner?

no, the stock tensioner is a pulley assembly
First go up from the bottom and look at the pulley that has a 17mm nut in it. USE JACK STANDS! dont take it off, just loosen it enough so it can have some play.
Then, when you are looking at the blower from the top in between the power steering resovoiur and the timing chain cover, its the gold 14mm hex nut.
counter clock-wise will "loosen it" so you can put the stock belt back on. (it should be in your manual, if not, use a chiltons, haynes or fsm)
then tighten the 14mm nut so the belt cant twist past 90 degrees.
tighten the 17mm nut and torque to spec.
on startup, if the belt squeaks, its too loose.

Thank you for the instructions. I have visited the advanced auto parts website to look for the belts.
I am assuming what i need is a serpentine belt. They have a few, and i was told the belts would cost be about 40+. This adds to my confusion should i be purchasesing 1 large belt or 2, because each of their belts cost about $20.
Geez i am asking all these questions i am suprised there isn't a sticky or how to on replacing belts. Seems like something that happens alot with SCed maxes.
Hopefully i can stumble my way through!

Depending on the PS belt's condition, you may want to replace that one too.
Man...
I spent all of saturday attempting to replace the stock belt.............. NO LUCK!
I did everything suggested from the .org, and in the haynes manual.
First i removed my supercharger pipping (Now my MAF appears to be blown) so that i could get room to loosen the Golden nut to reduce belt tension.
I then loosened the golden nut. From under the car i used a 14 MM wrench to loosen the nut ON THE IDLER PULLEY (TOOK me all day to find a tool that could reach, and even after loosening it I still can't get enough room to get the belts on)
I need about 1/4 inch more to get the belts on. The idler pulley even with it loosened won't give me enough room to get the belt on.
Right now i am extremely frustrated. Car is dead, dead maf, can't get a simple belt on...
I am just not sure what to do next.
Any suggestions?

The Stillen Idler Pulley (top pulley nearest the SC) is not used when you run in the stock set-up.
Simply put a shorter belt (shorter than stock due to smaller Kit Pulley) on the Alternater, AC, Crank and route "under" the Adjuster Pulley (backside).
Although a bit tight I think I used A: 122-LL-23-11NISSAN 111720-W002 6PK1065, These numbers are "all" on the same NISSAN Factory Belt. I am not sure which set of numbers to use. One will work. Actually, a belt 1/2 to 1 inch longer should also work as the one I listed was slightly short and needed a little extra effort to get on. It did work though.
Also, You may have "knocked" the MAF electrical connector wire off. Look for a dangling wire where the Sensor would normally be.
Air flow is restricted do to the SC being in place, but the car will run.
All the above was done on a 1996, 4th GEN Maxima, 5 speed.
Hope this helps!
