turbo piping

from reading the stickies i know that 3" piping is needed for a turbo but im curious as to what piping exactly. is that all piping including coming off the exhaust manifold all to way to the muffler? or is it just the piping visible from the engine bay, ie. the intake piping?

that is reffering to the exhaust piping, which should be 3" mandrel bent. the intake (charge) piping depends on the size of your turbo and boost level. 2.5" should be suffecient for that.

edit: to clarify, in refrence to the exhaust piping, assuming you are running the standard setup by merging both exhaust manifolds before the exhaust turbine inlet, the pipes coming from each manifold will work just fine if you use between 2 and 2.5" and then 3" when its merged. the major part that needs to be 3" is all turbo-back piping meaning everything after the exhaust turbine outlet to the muffler.

ok thank you, so if im planning to turbo, should i not buy a cat-back exhaust and just have a machine shop custom make the piping for me?

unless you are particular on your catback, there is really no benefit in using brandname catbacks. having a machine shop make the turbo back piping for you all the way down to and including the muffler would be the cheapest route and would not be any better or worse that using a brandname muffler. if you wanted, you could easily find a brand name muffler and have them weld it onto the piping but the only benefit would be the sound. when having a turbo setup, 2/3whp difference between different companies mufflers really doesnt make any difference at all in comparison to the large power gain from the boost.

i dont know if youve seen the threads on this or not, but if being quiet is a concern, you could always use a cut-out on your exhaust before the cat and keep the stock catback.
