rc says the pintel caps are there to protect the injector, they shouldn't bother performance. they say you should replace them if they are broken because the injectors are costly. they perform this service on a machine for $1.25 each. they said to specify "REPLACE PINTEL CAPS ONLY", when you send them in, or they will also perform cleaning, which is $28.50 each.

in addition, when the car is turned off there will usually be one small drop of fuel on the end of the injector. The pintal cap will direct thaT drop of fuel away from the opening of the injector helping to reduce clogging. With out a pintal cap the enzymes, or what have you, will dry on the end.

In some applictions, the pintle cap just protects the pintle and wicks away fuel droplets to minimize depositing (like Mike said). In this case a missing or broken pintle cap is no big deal.
In other applications (such as 4th gen maxima sidefeeds) the pintle cap MUST be present and intact. It holds on the lower o-ring. without the pintle cap, you will blow out your lower o-ring and have massive fuel leaks.
