probably the dumbest question ever but I was wondering how BOV's work with auto's. I thought the BOV wires to the throttle sensor but on an auto you never really let go of the throttle when accelerating through gears so what do you need to change to get the BOV to work properly?

There are no wires in a BOV. BOV operates off vacuum, throttle sensor has nothing to do with it. When you let off the gas on a turbocharged car, the air which WOULD have gone into the engine now cant, because the throttle plate is closed, so the BOV releases that pressurized air (rather than it surging back through your turbo and killing it quickly). In manual trans cars, you let off the gas between shifts typically, which is along the lines of your thinking I'm sure, whereas in an auto you dont. But ANY time you let off the gas the air will back up, not just during shifts. Therefor, BOV is still good for an auto, if you are flooring your turbo auto and then let off the gas quickly to get on the brakes, that has nothing to do with shifting, but your throttle plate is closed and that pressurized air would surge back through your turbo and shorten the life of it, unless you have a BOV.

So BOVs are not only for 5 spd cars, they are for any car with a turbo that ever lets off the gas (both auto and manual).

oh ok yah i knew it goes off when you release the throttle but i thought it was wired.. thanks for clearing that up. kind of sux though that with an auto you cant get the nice BOV sound between each gear shift unless you ghetto style it.

Neal, do you think the kit-provided Bosch BOV is adequate for a supercharged auto or is an aftermarket unit preferable? I'd prefer to just leave the Bosch on there but if there truely is a performance gain and/or better SC wear protection, I will spring for the aftermarket unit. Thanks.

you should like not hearing that sound because it means that you are hold that boost into the next gear.

I love my manumatic. no letting of the gas and the beauty of shifting when I want.

ptato, I don't know enough about the bosch bov to give any meaningful advice, sorry.

The Bosch bov is ok functionality-wise but it just looks plain fugly. On top of that, you don't get to hear the whoosh when you let off the gas pedal.!
