Has anyone squeezed in a 4" long air filter (stock is 3")?
I'm not sure exactly how he did his calculations, but a tech. at K&N told me that the stock 7" dia. by 3" long filter (comes stock with the Stillen SC kit) does not flow enough for a 3.0 liter engine, 6500 RPM max, 9 lb of boost.
He said the stock filter flows 395 CFM but I need 554 CFM.
I was hoping to squeeze in the 7" dia. by 4" L filter. It wil be tight but think it will make it according to my quick measurement last night.
What do you guys think?
The stock 3" long K&N filter, part number RA-0980.
The 4" long K&N filter, part number RA-0990 I would like to buy.
Edit: Installed picture:

Thanks confused. Yeah, I was thinking about that too - it might very well fit, once in, but getting it in/out might be a pain. I was hoping for a quick release clamp and an easy in/out so I can remove the filter on track nights.
Ice/93turbo, I hear you. And I haven't ruled out CAI. I was just hoping to not have to cut a hole and/or remove my windsield reservoir. And, as mentioned, I would like to be able to remove the filter quickly/easily (and throw on an old sock for the night
).
I have plans to build something similar to the Max Air Box that the Supra guys have. An aluminum box surrounding the filter from engine bay heat with a tube/duct feeding ambiant air from the front.

I haven't actually removed my filter yet for track nights, I'm just planning to. But, yeah, I was thinking of throwing on some kind of screen protection like a thin sock or a stocking/pantyhose or the like.

, tons of space on the other side....I'm not sure what "the other side is" but I wouldn't even bother relocating the windshield washer reservoir (unless you are doing Cold Air Intake and you have to). All you need to do is rotate the filler neck and you should have more than enough room for a 7" diameter filter. If you really are determined to have the filler neck out of your way completely, just remove the darn thing. Leave the tank and just ditch the filler neck. It isn't like you are ever going to have washer fluid in the neck itself. If you need to add fluid, just temporarily stick the neck in or use a funnel. I might do that. We would just need to think of a cover of some sort to keep debris from falling in the tank.

Well, I wouldn't beleive it if I didn't experience it myself. But the bigger filter made a huge difference. It arrived last week and I installed it last night. It isn't that easy to get in/out but doable. It is kind of like a puzzle. Anyway, I now spin my tires for a second or so at hard launches and I got a whole pound of boost more! I am still reading too low - 6 psi with a 3.25" pulley but it is better than 5 lb. Granted, there are two possible reasons for my low psi before - I think I had way too much "K+N juice" on my old filter and my SC must have eaten some kind of rubber piece because I had rubber pieces on my MAF screen. Not sure what that is from - and not sure what made me look. Anyway, I think the new 4" filter is really helping but maybe I'll clean my old 3" and try it again with less filter oil. I'll take pictures of the 4" filter if any one requests, but it isn't that hard to imagine. Oh, I also added a crankcase filter and my Bosch BOV now vents to the atmosphere.

Thanks Choray. Unfortunately the night before I read your post I did the big no-no you warn me about here. I actually did think about it getting sucked into the SC too. That's why I pulled the sock really tight and used a hose clamp. No luck. The SC sucked it in and ate it anyway.
When I heard it, I stopped immediately and pulled out what I could from the blades. The rest of the sock was removed once I got home. My MAF screen looked like a dryer screen after drying a white fluffly blanket.
I can't see any visible damage but please everyone, don't do what I did.
You don't need to relocate the washer fluid resouvoir for the CAI. My filler neck is gone too. I fill it with a long funnel.
You did what?
I heard that some people used screen door material with hose clamps, but I would never try it.

I know the things I did are not overly difficult to imagine (changed the stock 3" filter to a 4", added a crankcase filter, vented the stock Bosch BOV to the atmosphere) but since someone PMed me for pics of the 4" filter, I might as well share them with everyone. Here you go:
4" filter. Tight but doable:
Stock Bosch BOV venting to atmosphere:
Little crankcase filter (I just stuck it on the end of my stock hose for now):
Zoomed out:
Link to PhotoBucket with more pics...
