Pics of my progress: turbo install (56K bad...)

Here are a few pics of my progress...
I'm hoping to get the feed/down pipes and 3 in exhaust made sometime before X-mas. I''m having a local guy do it but in order for that to happen I would need to install the IC and mount the turbo so he would know where to weld. So far I have the gauges, injectors, z32 MAF, IC & piping, wideband module and turbo timer install. I still need to some what mount the turbo and work on last part of IC piping. Once I have it up and bugs worked out I will install the EBC and J&S so for now here are just some pics for enjoyment.

Wow, Looks great. What size intercooler are you running? Did you keep the bumper support? Im really hoping that mine is going to fit under the bumper and keep the support.

At first I had to cut the support but it did not turn out well at all. The inlets on the IC weren't lining up with the holes that were cut so I had to scrap the idea of keeping the support (I know its not the safest route) so instead of the typical PFI Ic setup where one of the pipes is routed in front of the valve cover, I routed it over the top of the IC (similar to having a same side inlet/outlet IC). With this I hope at least it can take some impact force away even though it may not be as much as a support if I was to get into an accident. I may redo this IC setup eventually in the spring but it will do for now.

BTW- intercooler size is 28x6.25x3.5

Everything is looking good. 3.5" is thick, must have been a very tight fit. Any other pics of the intercooler install?

I believe its either a 3 in or 3.5 in not sure exactly, will have to measure again.

I still have to mount the turbo and make sure theres enough room for the turbo pipes to fit. I have a feeling its gonna be a pretty tight fit.

I you really wanted to keep the bumper support, you could have gone with a 3" thick. Thats what im doing, 3" thick and 8" high and it should fit right behind the support.

I don't remember if it was 3.0 or 3.5 but now that its on, its too PITA to change it. Maybe down the road when I have more power, I will upgrade to a bigger one or one with the same side end tanks. The car is in the shop now getting the pipes done so hopefully sometime next week, it will be running.

In my case its not that it was too thick its that it was too tall.

Same here, the thickness wasn't necessary the problem rather the height of it. Mine being a 6.25 in tall with it lining up with the bottom of the bumper cover, the holes that I cut originally for the passenger side would not line up with the endtank so I was force to loop it back over the IC and thru the battery tray location. I wouldn't have been able to do this if the support was not removed.

looks sweet. I see what you did with the injectors. Those screws are a PITA.
Lets see some pic of the turbo. and how you are mounting it.

Went to the shop yesterday(sat), the front section of the foward y-pipe (the rear bank is a separate section) to the turbo is done and it looks really good. The turbo is now mounted separate from the battery tray and is still very sturdy from the 3 brackets holding the feed pipe. The only thing that I forsee is I may not be able to run a pipe and air filter to the turbo due to its location, I have a metal mesh grill (same pattern as a window mesh and its aluminum) that I can put on the compressor but I'm afraid it may not do as well of a job as a air filter. Anyone have any experience with running just a mesh on the turbo? Will it hurt the not running an air filter? it will screen big things but dust may be too small, I'm thinking of getting a piece of very breathable cloth that I can put on top of the mesh to get another layer of filtering.
The only things that is needed to be done is the down pipe, exhaust and tapping some vaccum lines.

Don't do that to yourself man. Think about how hot that turbo gets. There should be some way that you can get some piping in there to relocate the filter. try to get it in the fender. If you have to go through some sheet metal, do it. The bumper support is already gone.

I know, I really have to look at it more thoroughly. It wasn't on my mine at the moment in time cuz I was looking more on the feedpipe than anything. I'm sure I can put something together and be able to use a filter but I'll have to see once I get the car back.

Yes its going to be on the charged side since I have no emange to prevent it from stalling. Last time I check my safc won't keep it from stalling idle either so for now it will be on the charge side.

no, its actually a inch higher than the tray. Its held on by the feed-pipe, which are held with bracket on the motor mount. I believe he will be making another bracket that will connect to the tray but even without it, its suprisingly sturdy.

Make sure to support the turbo.. I took apart Frosty's car.. and he had multiple stress cracks in the Y-pipe.. He used 16 guage tubing as well..

don't connect it to the tray as the turbo, the turbo pipes need to be able to move with the motor, if you connect it to the tray you'll crack something for sure. put the brackets on parts that move with the engine.

Unless you have a flex section in the feed pipe, which a reverse y-pipe setup would. But probably not a forward design

No flex section on the forward y-pipe so should I bolt it to the battery tray or not? I think it wouuld be more stressful for the pipe if the turbo is stationary. I have one bracket holding the pipe so it will move with the motor...

No, if you don't have a flex section it needs to be bolted to some sort of bracket that will move. Kinda like a exhaust hanger.

very true the turbo MUST move with the engine to ensure a trouble free exhaust system.

Turbo will not be bolted to battery tray, instead it will be held by the feed pipe which has two brackets that will allow the turbo to move with the motor. I'm hoping to get the car back by Monday or Tuesday.
