Woah what's this?

Nah just kidding . Any ways.

I have a 1988 nissan maxima , The one with the VG30E 300zx 9:1 compression engine.

And i have been talking to my friends , And my other friends at redline about doing a turbo project on my 88 , First of all people tell me not to boost a higher compression engine , Insted get the VG30ET engine and use that since it has lower compression 8.3:1 , But then other people say go with an aftermarket turbo , Put it on the 9:1 compression engine and the reason's why are:

faster spooling of turbo
more power throughout the entire rev range
much better low end power which makes for easier launches
better daily driveability
potentially better fuel economy as higher compression tends to get better gas mileage

And then people say i should only run 5-6 psi , And then other people say 8 , And then some one said 10......

See now i get mixed storys ... , People also tell me go with a T3/T04E .. Then others say...GT28R , I just dont know who to listen to!!! And then i get mixed info about electronics .....

Could some one please help me here...

Thank you!

First of all... Disregard anything people said about not boosting the stock 9:1 compression ration VG30... 9:1 is perfect.. At the moment, im running 13 psi into my Stock Original VG with 185000 miles on it... so thats not at all an issue. I even had my wastgate line come off and it surged to well into the 20-25 psi range.. .. but after that fact, a few runs later i ran a 110 mph trap speed, so the engine must be fine. As for turbo,.. well thats up to you. If you want Instant boost, go smaller, if you want TONS of top end... go larger. I perfer to be on the large side,.... but then again thats just me.

So as for the engine... as long as you have enought fuel going into the engine... 10.5-11.5:1 Air fuel ratio, and correct timing... you engine is basically garrentted not to die.. your factory engine is Perfect for boost.... i promise..

Jeremy...

Front mount... yes... Alcohol... maybe when you get into the real high boost ranges.. under 15 and id say you fine without it.. maybe even higher... again... these engines are tough... but If there tuned incorrectly .. they will still pop.

So do you think the t3/t4 would be a good first turbo ? And if i want some thing bigger move up a little?

And what Electronics do you recommend , And do you recommend i rebuild my engine ? , Or what ? and about mounting the turbo where do you think is the best? Its pretty small in there! , Shes tight!

If your engine is running fine... boost it as is.. There is a guy in there that is running i think 12 psi through a 210000 mile engine.. without any problems. Electronics wise... the best way would be to tune your factory ecu.. this can basically be don the same way as im doing.... I belive. Bernard who is on this forum would have more information on weather it would work or not. ... i dont have time right now to get into all of the details of The tuning.

I have two option's.

Get some one to build me a racing auto trans , For 3000 dollars.

Swap a 5 speed in , and get a stage clutch from spec , With alum pressure plate , And alum flywheel .

If you actually have to prove your "knowledge" by stating this:

.
Then you are already WAY in over your head. But if you still want to try this, I have a set of Z31 turbo exhaust manifolds with a T3 attached to it for sale.

because the VG30E in the z31 is like this

Trans here
_^_
| ..|
|.. |
.__

In 1988 max its like this

_____
| .....|> Trans here
------

I really doubt a z31 5speed would fit in there.

Well duh! I know I can't swap in a T56 manual to my old maxima either. But anyone that knows anything realizes that it never has to be actually stated.

But thanks for the drawing

But you still need the manifolds and this can be converted to a hybrid easy when you get it rebuilt. Cheaper than a new unit

I think you should get 2 T66 turbos, and you should reduce your exhaust to 1", remember turbos love alot of backpressure. That keeps the compressor running very efficiently. While you are at it why don't you just throw a SC on it too, that will help with the lowdown power, NOS can do the same too.....That's the set-up I am going with.......
