anyone using stand alone units

its been a long time since i sold my 1997 max and didn't enter the org now i'm about to buy another 4th gen and i'm thinking about going turbo after having so much fun with my 240sx/sr20det i'm doing a little research and just want to know what are you guys using besides apex and that kind of things i want to know if any of you is using a complete stand alone system like aem,haltech,tec3,microtech,sds

in my car i was using a Microtech lt-10s and it was great i did 274whp on stock engine with stock t25 running like 18psi or with normal bolt ons

one person has an AEM EMS on his 4th gen, that's it as far as standalones go on the board.

when $300-500 engine managment systems are working just fine, most see no reason to go with a $1500-4000 one. not to mention most maxima owners just plain can't afford to drop that much on a single component.

Probably the single biggest factor right there

well you have a point there about the money it was'nt until about a 8 months after i did the swap on my 240sx that i switch to a stand alone unit but i decided to do it for a lot of reasons first i got tired of the stalling problem when you have a blow off venting to atmosphere instead of recirculating because the microtech uses a map sensor instead of a maf

and after my second maf stop working i decided to spend a few bucks on a system and i was more than lucky because someone in australia(where microtech is based) was selling the whole thing with a hand controller for just $550 thats almost half of what you pay on a system like that so it was a steal

and after all i went to a local dyno using the same set up but this time with the stand alone i was able to get like 20-25 whp more than using an apex ,no to say they are not worth it indeed the apex worked great for that period but on the long run it a good investment

i bet it must work good on a turbo/sc max i already contacted Tim Possimham from microtech in australia so he can tell me if this system can be used on our cars most probably he can tell me because i know for a fact that it can be used on 300zxtt but not sure abot the maxima being vey similar it might work

thanks! anyway and still working on my english so sorry for the typos

Well anything could be made to work - but the 300ZX sensors and VQ sensors are not in any way similar so don't put any stock in the fact that just because it works on 300zxs it will work on VQs.

our CAS has very strange outputs and that seemed to be the biggest hinderance to turbo97se who has the AEM on his car. would possibly be simpler to do a custom CAS and pickup than mess around with our stock one, maybe. for $550 it might be worth a shot if you're used to working with it.

well like i said maybe it works maybe it doesn't there is another system on the market called sds it uses a magnetic hall sensor mounted on the crank pulley and the magnetic pick up somewhere around the pulley this way you don't have to use your stock cas but i don't have to much information about this one but know a few guys that have them installed on different cars including another 240sx

on the other side i don't quite like the aem system being way to expensive lets see what happen after all i'm just thinking going turbo but its not an easy task specially on maximas, but the thing is after you go boosted you never want to go back
