spool problem!

Ok I have dek with a hx35 on it. Im trying to figure out where my problem is? I will start to show boost at 2800 rpms in 2nd gear like a psi. The turbo seems to spool very slow. It comes on quick but it take about 1000 rpms to make 6 psi. Their are guy with 2.3 engine with this turbo making 15 psi by 3800rpms. So I think I should be able to do the same or better. Ok so what would make a turbo spool slow. OK my hks waste gate has a 9.7lb spring in it but with open down pipe the most Iv seen is 8.0psi With a full 3inch cat back its like 7.0 but it want make 7 intill like 4800rpms. My waste gate has a small leak in it at idel you can feel a very small steam of exhaust coming out at the dump tube. It kinda builds boost like a supercharger. But im wondering if i may have some kind of leak on the cold piping as well! what do you think.

My geuss would be what it seems like yours is, either a problem with the waste-gate being partially open for some reason and allowing exh. gasses to not spool the turbine, or a major leak on the charge pipes. Weld or clamp the ish out of everything on the charge side, and if you have a vacuum pump w/gauge (aka a brake bleeder....) verify that the wastegate doesn't start opening before 9.7 lb's. I could have sworn when my budies supercharged mustang was leaking alot of boost (before he had a few things welded and changed to a different clamp set-up) he could easily hear it leaking, but I could be completely wrong. On my Z I could hear a noticable change in the tone when the wastegate was opening, doubt you would be able to notice much though if it was partially opening at a lower pressure. If you know for sure that it is seated and fully closed at 0 psi and you can see the arm move when it's installed then pump it up and make sure it's not opening before 10 lb's I think would be something to check right?

Dont you think this turbo should be able to spool faster than that. If it starts at 2800 Im thinking I should have a full 9 psi by 3400 what do you think?

If the waste gate is partially open all the time then it wastes potential energy.

Even an IC piping leak can also cause you to spool slow or max out a certain psi. Check and recheck all connections (IC piping, Charge pipe, Wastegate) and get that wastegate leak fix asap. That is the #1 issue then look for leaks in the rest of the system.

It all depends on the wastegate, if the wastegate spring prevents the valve to open you'll see increasing boost until you let off the gas or until the engine gives (turbocharger runs on a closed loop system). In your case, we already know that your wastegate is leaking (open loop so to speak) hence its not gonna allow you to see as much boost or spool per rpm compared to a properly working wastegate, the more boost you see the more air is going to leak out. Fix the known issue first then go from there.
