Turbo spitting out oil. Bad seals, high oil pressure?

ok, here is the case:

I went for a drive, floored it a few times. Came back, got under the car, noticed there was oil leaking out of the flange of the exhaust housing. I checked the charge pipe and no oil. its only out of the exhaust housing outlet. Now question is, when seals go bad, do both compressor and turbine go bad together? can it happen individually?

Also, can it be that there is too much oil pressure going into the turbo causing it to leak through the seals? I have a restrictor but how do i know if its still putting in too much pressure. and last can synthetic 10-30 be to thin for this turbo?

Thanx in advance

well, one of the biggest cause for oil to leak into the turbine side is a positive pressure in the drain hose. anything much more than the atmosphere's pressure and your going to loose some oil. This is on a healthy turbo of course, even in good circumstances a bad turbo can let oil into the turbine. There aren't really any seals in the turbo, it relies more on centripetal force and gravity to prevent oil from leaking out into the turbine and compressor. Both sides have basic piston ring style seals but thats about it. To high of inlet oil pressure can also do this, honda guys frequently have this problem it is usually solved by using a 1/16 inch restrictor. hope some of this helps.

yea it helps, thanx alot. Well my restrictor is .040 (1/25"), anything less than that and i think i'll starve the turbo. as i saw a post about it with someone with similar turbo doing it with .030 and killed the turbos within a couple of weeks. So with that said, my problem should be the return, I have to figure out what i can do about my return setup since i have a scavange pump. I gotta find out what size and length house the rear mount turbo guys use

do you use an independent oiling system for the turbo?, or is it still attached to the engine. If its independent you could try and add some vacuum to the oil tank. If not, it may be because your scavenge pump isn't doing its job quite well enough. A good scavenge pump should pull a vacuum on the drain of the turbo, even if only slight thats enough to stop oil from getting past the seals.

why are you running 5w30 oil? shouldn't you be running 10w30?

nah its not independent, the pump runs the oil back to the engine. and yea there is vacum on the line. im goign to reroute my return hose so its not too vertical. make it easier for the pump to pull the oil
