Will heat from a turbo kill my battery

I was kicking around the idea of turboing my 5-speed 4gen and wanted to place the turbo in that open space under the battery, front of the tranny and behind the left fan. but I am worried if the heat from the piping and turbo will kill my battery being that the turbo will be a few inches from the battery. I thinking that if I paint heat wrap, spray then heat wrap again the turbo and piping this would lower temp help but not sure how much. I read a few threads here and other forums about how well wraping helps but I did not find anything about temps

and before anyone says it I do not want to move the battery to the trunk

I really don't know the answer to your question but my best guess would be that the heat from the turbo over time would affect the battery. I would just recommend relocating the battery to the trunk.

I guess what I looking to find out is if wraping the turbo and piping will it lower underhood temps close to someone that's running uncoated headers or if I could touch the turbo and piping after wraping them.

Turbo is kinda low and would think you ma have drainback issues.

not worried about draining issues this is not my setup it's just to give everyone a idea of turbo location. he moved the turbo about 3inches higher later on to solve this problem.

my question is with the location of the turbo if I heat wrap it along to the piping will it reduce heat enough that it will not affect battery life

Heat is always a problem for batteries. Even without a turbo, it gets very hot under the hood. A turbo just compounds the problem.

If I park my car and come back after a few hours, the turbine housing is still hot. So imagine how much heat is being radiated back into the engine compartment over a period of hours. This will kill a battery.

I moved my batt to the trunk. It's a Optima Red Top so I'm not worried about hydrogen gas buildup. Plus, the relocated battery frees up space for other stuff in the engine compartment. So it is win-win situation.

My suggestion is to wrap all the turbo piping, also make some kind of vent for the engine bay, a way to let the heat vent out, maybe louvers or w/e. that will really reduce under hood temps.

thanks guys

I am going to wrap the turbo and piping and use that metal heat paper stuff to line the battery tray. then I will compare the temps to a stock 4gen and if the are still really high I'll either try the scoop or just relocate the battery to the trunk

use that alluminium or what ever it is heat shielding stuff make a box of it around your battery, its kinda got a rough pressed surface with little raided and depressed sections in it about 3 - 5 mm long, kinda hard to explaine but im sure if you saw it you would know what it is

Go with a Naca Duct Tom and you'll be fine. temp will be normal operating temp.
Thats why on my max I went with the 4 inch cause it got too hot under the hood. that duct made a HUGE difference. doesnt take long to cut in.

^ get one of those electric ones wired up to a seperate battery and power amplifier......very effective for 5psi, anything more you will nead a conventional turbo setup

Not at all, lol. He's just pointing out to the guy with 3posts that if he wants to ask something as simple as THAT, he should do some reading around on his own and when he has something more specific to ask, he may ask ON HIS OWN THREAD instead of THREADJACKING someone else's thread.

Until then he will continue to get stupid answers unless a mod sees the threadjacking and bans him. I hope he gets the point

t6378tp, just wrap the tubing. If you're mounting the turbo in the same location as SFLTech then you'll be fine.

ALso it should be noted that he did NOT fix the drain back issue by raising the turbo 3". He used a pump, same as Im using on my rear-mount turbo. THAT fixed it.

You should install the Duct and still move the battery. You will need space for maintenance. But good luck... Post pics...

I emailed the guy in florida with the low mount setup and he said that he does not have any problems with his battery, like you said just wrap the piping and turbo. but there is another guy in nyc with the same setup on a 5.5gen without a pump and he does not have any problems. so it may just be a matter of proper placement and I should be good to good.

but right now it does not matter since I blew the motor in my truck and all money and time is directed there right now

Out of curiosity and kinda OT but have any of you guys had any problems with the starter getting too hot? My old camaro had longtubes and they were pretty close to the starter and the heat would kill it if i drove the car for a while.

I wouldn't think that you would have this problem, just curious.

The battery is affected by heat but should be fine if you take some preconditions to lower heat! I put an aluminum dividing wall in between the turbo and battery located and attached to the turbo on the top of it! If problems do arise I suggest either relocating to the truck with a simple relocation kit or venting some of the heat or building a bigger divider wall and using some heat wrap or turbo wrap!
