turbos and Muffler Restriction

Most of your know Im rear-mount turbo'd. Car sounds amazing, its not too loud at all (IMO), no rasp, just deep gargle at idle (very deep, like quiet open cutout lol).

Long story short, my old man is in a pissy mood (lol, sounds like Im a kid. Im still living with parents, college isnt exactly cheap). Told me that I better "change the muffler on your car. Just put it back the way it was before, I need some tranquility". I told him the RMT situation with replacing the muffler. Told me "I dont care what you have to do, fix that $h!t bla bla bla".

So behind the muffler, really there's no space for a muffler, there is but it would be a VERY tight squeeze, on a very small muffler.

Any recommendations? Will a straight-through (a la magnaflow) style get the job done? or would I need an old school baffled-chamber muffler? Keep in mind I dont want to hamper performance here, with the turbo being in the back and all. Im trying to avoid doing like streetz with the cutout for the sake of convenience, thus my leaning towards a straight-through muffler. But if its still going to be loud... I guess I wont have a choice.

Any effective straight-through mufflers that actually muffle? lol

Thank you!

just keep it quiet when you leave the house and pull up thats what I did when I lived at home. Is what you could do is buy an electric cut out but route it to a different muffler under the car so you can just flip a switch and it would be quite. Would also be great if cops don't like loud cars like in my town!

Not experienced with FI but the magnaflow straights arent to great for quiet(especially the round body ones). If you can, a 14" round body as a resonator and a 21" 6"x9" muffler would be about as quiet as possible with your space constrictions.

Also, check out burns mufflers, they arent cheap but make quality stuff for this kind of situation.

Straight thru magnaflow will make your dad even more upset, it wont lower volume will just make it alot deeper and annoying. Whats wrong with how i have it?. you dont have to put a cutout, just get a 3" inlet/outlet, thats only reason why i put a cutout cuz muffler i put had too small of inlet/outlet and really affected my turbo setup (to the negative). Theres more than enough space back there. just take it to miami muffler so they can do mandrel bends instead of them crush bends u got rite now.

Burns have like 6" mufflers.

Expensive but they're probably all you can do in your situation, and you can turn around and sell it for little loss in the pocket book.

This is probably the best for your situation..

I work 730-noon tomorrow. After work Im going straight to the muffler shop, gotta have this issue sorted out by tomorrow nite- I kinda like living where Im at LOL.

I'll take pix and post them up afterwards. Thanks for the input.

Seems I may be able to stick a baffled muffler back there... gonna have to sacrifice some performance for the sake of living here at home lol. Housing is more important than WHP so chamber'd muffler it is lol.

and my sexiness

lol

btw, Its a Magnaflow muffler. Perforated core, no baffles. 3" in/out, center outlet/side inlet. Cost me $90+ installation.

It works GREAT! car sounds amazing. It muffled out all the loud growl I had at WOT and the lil rasp I had, yet it left the turbo's spooling sound. Basically it sounds like a mix bet'n a Z33 and a 335i with catback. Has that "tuned sound" to is. Gotta try to get a video clip this weekend!

Thanks!

good point you bring up my auto-friend.

1st gear seems as it doesnt rev as "Freely"
2nd gear has a gradual increase in boost, like the needle slowly moves through the PSI, where as before it would just go to 0, then up to the 5psi. and I did see the 5psi
3rd gear went to 5psi as well
4th gear hit 6psi and that was it :-(

So on 4th gear, it did give me a 2psi pressure drop (better than streetz' 3-4psi drop on his 2.5" in/out Dynomax). OMG I want to get a sound clip in lol

With that rear turbo setup, what's the lag like? I would have expected heaps of it from that distance.

Not if you wrap the exhaust leading to the turbo. Thats the trick.

Keep the exhaust as hot as possible up to the turbo to maintain its velocity out of the engine to the turbo. My turbo spools around 2900 in 4th gear- keep in mind this is excellent given that my turbo is a gigantic monster lol.

That sounds awesome. Personally I'd put a small little elbow coming out of the muffler just so it looks a little more "normal" (tip exiting where it would stock). But other than that, slick setup.

Ahh, gotcha. No need for a tip, I just meant that it would look weird to have the muffler tucked back in there and nothing leading to the cutout in the bumper, but you have it covered. No tip needed with 3", it looks baller by itself

Its even more high-pitched inside the cabin. And from outside forget it. If Im doing a flyby on you, that sucka is loud (the spooling), cool stuff! And yea I know I have to change my tranny fluid, its got like 40k on it. Also want to cut the shifter a bit more (stock cut shifter, STS was causing me to miss gears like woah, cut stock shifter, hardly ever). thanks!

so.... you guys remember that 2psi drop I had after adding the muffler??? problem FIXED!

pipe gets plasma cut

cutout gets welded on

cap is on and off (2psi less, or added) at my will

It does sound like a dumptruck under 1800, but after that it sounds pretty good (again, concidering its dumping right out the turbo, lol). no soundclip yet

Oh heck no! lol There is nothing stock on my exhaust, including headers. That's ebay headers on custom equal length y-pipe, on warpspeed test pipe and resonated b-pipe.

I never said I used 2" catback, Im using aftermarket 2.5" catback (stock is 2.3"), I would never use stock piping anyways. Especially with the restrictions along the way. After the turbo its 3"
