Bending Rims

Hey guys, I need your opinions on this badly. I am getting my suspension put in next week and after that I'll be getting rims before the summer. The rims I'm getting are these. If you don't want to check the link they're ATS Planets: they're deep dish, they have a lip.

So the question is, do I get 17's or 18's. The problem is that I live in Boston and I am afraid of bending rims on the potholes. The streets are rotten here. I'd like to hear from others who live in Boston or NYC or somewhere with a lot of potholes especially about what I should do. The rims are deepdish, but I have seen them small, and they don't look as bad small as other deep-dish rims do...aplthough I've never seen them on a Max.

Thanks a bunch for your opinions.

I disagree. I have 18's now, and although I'm very satisfied with them, I wish I had gotten 19's. We usually don't have a lot of potholes in the DC area, but this winter wasn't good for the roads so they are popping up everywhere! STILL 18'S

The only reason to get 17s is if you're going for a race set-up or a conservative set-up. make sure they are at least 18x8.

I had same problem..i went with BBS chrome plated forged rims in 17x7.5 variety...

wanted 18's but didn't wanna bend rims in NYC.....I am happy with my choice and I've hit some nasty potholes and they are still strong and not bent...

i went with a 245/45 tire also, for more traction and handling

Any wheel with a lip is going to look smaller that a same size wheel with no lip-example Konig Tantrums. Make sure you get a tire with a decent sidewall, like 245/40. Do a search, there's a few guys running 245/45/18.

im running 18's and live in montreal, where there are more potholes then road, plus I was running it with GC's at the lowest settings for a month before raising the back end to get rid of that saggy look (happened when it settled)

Get the 17" planets. I had them. Outer lip to lip diameter is like 18.5". They look like 18's because the outer lip is so big.

I was thinking of getting 19s but stuck w/ 18s considering there are crapload of potholes and bumps where I live. I'm happy with 18s and I'm yet to bend my rims. I would probably have bent my 19s if I had them.

Since you asked, I'd say 18's with a beefy tire if you're worried about potholes. It was between 18's or 19's for me, and even though I live in a heavily pothole-populated area, the fact that I can run a 40 series tire on 19's made the decision easier for me - I'd probably have run 40's on 18's too, so it didn't make too much of a difference. Definitely go with 18's...especially with a lip, if you get them in 17's they'll look quite small

I make no attempt to avoid potholes with my 18's and they have held up beautifully *knock on wood*. They are forged however so I can't attest to how cast rims would hold up. I'm running 235/40/18's but would run 245/40/18 if they would fit on my car (won't clear rear strut housings).

I had 18's running on 225/40 series tires and with the potholes here in Houston i've managed to get a total of 5 bubbles and had to replace 2 tires in less than a year.

So i decided to go back to the comfort route and went back to 17's running higher profle 235/45 tires and i couldn't be happier. The ride is so much smoother (having the 18's made me forget how much smoother a Max can ride) - also have the PZero Nero M&S has made the noise levels that much lower compared to my 18" Sumitomo HTR+.

I was in a similar place, with crappy roads in NJ but a desire for nice rims. I went with 18's and 245/40 tires. Compared to my 17's, which had 235/45, the ride is hardly different. I've only had the wheels about a week so I can't really comment on how well they've held up, but I'm hoping for the best.

Go with the 18s and a 40 series tire and you should be okay. I think you'd really regret getting the 17s.... I think my 18s look too small sometimes.

I got 19" Axis Hagens with Toyo Proxies FZ4(235/35) in a town with tons of pot holes and i'm more worried about popping the tires on pot holes then bending the rim. Just as long as you don't hit the pot holes and train trackes at a high speed then you should be fine, On 18's you should do just fine plus if you go 17" you always look at your car and be like damn i should have gotten the 18"
