What tires should i get?

I have a 2000 SE, with the stock 17 inch alloys. I am looking for a tire to replace the stock bridgestone potenzas. I want an all season tire that focuses equally between comfort and good wet and snow traction. Wear and perfomance is not an issue.

High $, but I'm 18 months into a set of Michelin Energy and I like the overall performance on dry & wet pavement.

kumho ecsta supra 712. ZR rated, all season, very quiet. it has nice grip. the price is very reasonable ($87 for my 235/45/17) at tire rack.

The Yokohama AVS ES-100 is an excellent performer but it is still very affordable.

This is actually for my dad. He definately doesn't need z rated tires. He just wants something that is pretty affordable and has a very good ride, as well as good in snow and rain. He could care less about grip and perfomance, so no z-rated.

The kumho 712 is NOT an all season tire. Use of those in the snow would result in ones death and NOT exaggerating. It is EXTREMELY dangerous to recommend this as an all season tire to someone when it is anything but. I'm rather surprised you did so actually. The kumho 711 is all season M+S, the 712 isn't.

If your father wants to be safe in the winter he needs to get a set of real snow tires, period. They make winter driving almost like driving on dry pavement. the difference is night and day.

I assume they suck in rain/snow. I only drive my car when its nice.
I own a pair of 235/4017 kuhmo esta supra 712s on my 1 of 60 Daytona.
They handle great when its dry but they wear like anything. Most people only get about 10k on them.

They aren't that bad in the rain, not great but not horrible. Snow traction is nonexistent and ANY high performance summer-only tire should never be within 100 miles of a snowstorm. I can't stress this enough on an internet message board. Using a summer only tire in the snow is like putting 5 bullets in a 6 shooter and then putting it to your head. Most likely you won't get through it in good shape.

Sumitomo HTR+ 235/45/17

the best high performance all season tire for the money period.

they are like 90 bucks a piece at tirerack.com if not less.. the ratings are up there with the Michelins but they will cost you half of what you'd pay for those Michelins.

Definately look at the Continental Extreme Contact. I personally like the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S better, but they are quite a bit more $$$

I just bought a full set of Continental ContiExtremeContacts from $530 installed (drove down to TireRack and had them do the install). Check the ratings of the ContiExtreme and the Pilot Sport A/S.....nearly identical. ContiExtreme was $111/tire, Pilot Sport A/S was $197/tire. I wanted to get the Pilot Sport A/S becuase I've only heard good things about them, but I have heard equally good reviews of the ContiExtreme and the $$$ savings were quite substantial. on the way home from TireRack, it was light snow and when I got back into Chicago, the streets were wet...so far, good traction and I feel a great purchase !!!!

Tell you Dad to get the Kumho HP 716 from tire rack. All Season, nice ride, good reviews, great price ($65), and 50,000 mile warrenty. I just got a set for my I30 and couldn't be happier.

Yea if they made them in 17 inch sizes... he's got a 2000 with 17s. I have one of those and need new tires. I think I'm going to go with Sumitomo HTR+ 235/45/17

Kumho will last only 10k miles on the front but do extremely well on the rear. I am satisfied with mine, but I will be replacing them soon due to wear with a better tire. Tire Rack is the best place to search, you can look at comments by climate, driver style, and car type. Superb site.

Bridgestone Turanza LH's series tires are on top of the list for all-season grand touring. I currently have the LS-H series and they performed pretty goo so far (20K miles so far). Check out the link:

Just put on a set of Sumitomo HTR+ from tirerack. Installed at J&J automotive in Manassas, VA. They are great! The tires and the shop. No problems driving through the snow this morning. Got them just in the nick of time. And I got them in 235 40 17.

You are correct. That makes TWO Kumhos that are summer only on this thread now, don't get the 711s either.

Davegrun- I honestly am going to give up on this thread. People are suggesting tires like the Yokohama AVS Sport and Michelin Pilot sport. Those are summer only, max performance tires people. These tires are for his father for WINTER. The man will be a danger to himself and everyone else on the roads with those tires on his car in the snow.

If you'd like my recommendations as to which tires to get or not get feel free to PM me. My general suggestion is to NOT get any tire that V or Z rated. Sure there are V and Z rated all season tires out there but they are more oriented towards dry summer driving, and do not compete in the snow with more all season oriented tires. Some people on this thread are steering you and your father in a dangerous direction here and I want you to be safe. Perhaps a call to tire rack would be a good idea. Their representatives are very knowledgable and won't go recommending AVS Sports a such when what you need is an all season tire with good winter traction being the primary focus. Perhaps even go with a dedicated snow tire. That would be the safest route for your father for winter and would probably only cost him an extra $300-400 in the long run.
