noob needs some help. with everything.

keep in mind i dont really know... anything. an all round noob faq would be nice...

first, i need new snow tires for my 98 max se. im running all season tires, and theyre 5 years old now. not too much tread left. ive been skidding in the snow. what do i need to know/find out in order to pick a set of tires? what are the specs on stock 98 rims? ill probably pick em up at costco... they will install them for me, no? what brands should i be looking at? i dont want to spend too much money.

next, what do i do in the summer? can i do the switch of tires myself, relatively easily? any links i can read up on?

another option im looking at is buying some nicer summer rims/tires now. maybe someone wants to get rid of theirs for cheap, seeing as its winter? is that a good plan? what size rims does the stock 4g max look best with? again, what do i need to know about a set of rims/tires in order to make my choice...

edit: ohhh... found some good stuff. lack of search function sucks. :|

First of all, unless you got those expensive wheel balancing machines and other tools, you can not mount tires on the rims yourself. You should have a tireshop do it for you.

I would recommend going w/ some good all season performance tires instead of getting separate summer and winter tires. A good choice would be Falken Ziex 512. Excelent all season tires for its value.

Ok. If you can afford, get nice rims w/ summer tires for the summer time and get good winter tires for your stock wheels for the winter time.

No, you put on your nice rims and tires for summer, and change to steelies/stock with snow tires in the winter.

Yeah if you can afford to, and are planning on, buying a nice set of summer wheels in the spring time, what I would do right now is take your stock wheels, change them over to some new snow tires, and then keep them as your "winter" set from then on.

If you have a jack and a set of stands, you can change the wheels in the spring/fall yourself pretty simply. Just be sure to do it safely and properly.

I don't know how much Costco charges, but maybe check Canadian Tire too. I think they have a winter tire clearance sale on right now....
