Rim offset and width??

Ok Im looking to get some new rims for my car for summer time. I wanna go as wide as possible for traction/handling issues. Im not sure if I wanna go 17 or 18 yet,...but before I go looking for my rims I need to know how wide I can go and what the offsets are. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.
