18X8 with 45mm offset and 245/40 on 5th gen?

A friend of mine has a set of OZ Superleggera rims that he has offered to sell me. What I would like to do is run them on my 5th gen. From the calcs I've run, it seems like a 245/40/18 is the best tire size since it's height should be 99.45% of the height of the OEM 225/50/17 tire. My biggest concern is with the 45 offset. Does anyone have experience with the combination and/or know if I can run this combination successfully?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response. I'm somewhat new to this and a little confused. When I ran the numbers here: http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html , it showed that the extra inch of wheel width (from 7" OEM to 8" aftermarket) would be evenly split, (+13mm out toward lip and +13mm in toward spring), why do you think this could make the steering wheel feel lighter (especially considering the much wider tire)? Also, isn't the OEM 17" rim a 45 offset? Thanks again!

Yes, OEM 17" wheels have 45mm offset. You're better off having 35-40 offset because the wheels are slightly further apart and it gives you slightly better handling. Therefore, by using 5mm wheel spacers, your offset will be reduced to 40mm, which is just nice.

Thank you for everyone's feedback. So now the question is what kind of hub rings will I need for these rims and where can I find them? From what I've read, 5th gen Maxima's have a hub of 66.1mm. But I'm guessing the OZ hub is around 77mm? Additional comments welcome.

I would say tirerack or discounttiredirect should sell them. They sell enough aftermarket rims.

If you get spacers, make sure you check your studs to see if they will still be long enough.

Ok, so I bought my buddy's OZ Superleggera rims. They are the 18x8 with 45 off-set. I've pretty much decided to go with 245/40/18 because I think it will be 99.8% of the height of the 225/50/17 OEM size. So my question now is what tire to get. I want to spend $150/tire or less. I've been seriously considering the Kumho MX or possibly the new Kumho KU19. Any thoughts about these, either good or bad?

Thanks!

Do you plan to get all-season tires or summer-only?

Summer only (I have snow tires on my OEM rims), but wet weather performance is also important . . .

Hey, if you got snow tires on your OEM rims, I say **** it and go for summer-only tires. Get Kumho Supra 712. Those are cheap and stick to the ground like glue, but it has some setbacks. They're pretty loud, last for about 15k miles, and heavy.
If you opt to get all-season tires, get Sumitomo HTR +.

limsandy:

From my research it seems that the Kumho MX would offer much better dry weather performance than the 712, no?

I'm sorry to revive a dead thread, but I am about to install my rims and tires but I'd like to double check whether an 8" rim with a 45 offset and a 245 tire will or will not rub against the front struts. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks!
