vibrating with new rims/tires

hey i just put on 19s with hankook ventus k104s and they are great, but when i get up to about 50-55 MPH the steering wheel vibrates a lot....preety much a noticable amount, and im not SUPER picky...any ideas?? i figure it is the torque i put the wheels on, when i put them on i think some could be tigher than others....any other suggestions if this attempt doesnt work?? thanks

First make sure they're all torqued down using a torque wrench, don't just go until they're tight. I use 85 lb-ft for mine. If the problem is still there, and if they've been balanced once already, try getting them balanced at a shop that uses a Hunter Road Force balancing machine.

It sounds like a balance issue. Over torque will cause the rotors to warp and a shake when you hit the brakes but not usually as you drive. does it seem to ride fairly normal until you hit a 50 and come and go as speed increase

If you had local shop put your tires in for you, take it back to them and have your wheels balanced again

Wait a minute here.

Before getting them rebalanced, do you know if the hub rings were installed? They are a little collar that goes in between the hub on mounting surface and the wheel. Missing these could be the cause of your high speed vibration.

If that's not the problem THEN try to get them rebalanced or use a Hunter GSP9700 as suggested.

Sounds like a classic case of missing hub centric rings. Call up Discount Tire Direct and get Metal Hub rings sent to your door for $15 shipped within one week. Problem solved.

Me too!

I recently got a new set of Evo5 17" with Kumho 712s (2K SE) and I'm having the same problem except my vibration range is from 55 to about 83. I got them from TireRack and I'm positive that I have all the hub rings installed.

The supposedly came balanced but I noticed the vibrations right-away when I put them on. I then had Sears rebalance them at TireRack's expense and it got much better but not perfect. Month or two later, I took the wheels off - noticed that they torqued them way too much - and put them back on at about 86lbs. My car's been vibrating unpleasantly eversince.

Do some wheels need to be torqued down way over the spec to not vibrate? The car returns to its normal smoothness past 85mph so I try to keep that speed on the highways

humm what do the hub rings look like?? i didnt put anything extra in between, unless they were already placed inside the hub area of the rim.... yeah mine starts at aroun 55 then all the way up to around 70-75...then it goes away at 80, or maybe i just dont notice it as much cause of the bumbs on the freeway....but ill check for the rings tonight, if i dont have them ill order some and see what happens....

You can't see them without taking the wheel off. As I said, it's a thin metal or plastic collar that sits on the hub where the axle nut is. It might be stuck on the hub or in the wheel when you take the wheel off, but it should pop off or fall out.

i've noticed that most maximas get these shakes at some point in their life. first i would make sure they were balanced properly, then install the rings, and retorque to spec. if none of those things fix the problem, get an allignment. i had the shakes and pulled to the side a while back so i put it on the alignment machine just hoping to fix the pull. whenn i drove it i noticed the shaking was gone too.

2 of the evo-5's are bent. but before they were bent, i always had the vibrations. i took the wheels in 3 times to get rebalanced. 4th time, they told me that 2 were bent. i had no idea about the hub rings. i don't think i have them. the bent wheels are on the rears, and the fronts are fine. i still get vibrations, when i speed-up. it's like, if i step on the pedal, i feel a vibration after 50 mph. while crusing they don't vibrate..where can i get the hub rings??

rings are on and car is vibration free !!!

well today i went to local tire shop to buy some hubcentric rings - to my upmost supprise - I got them for free !!!
they are made out of plastic but it don't matter - i've put them on and took the car for test drive - wow @!!! what a difference - ride was smooth as glass !!! took the car up to 85mph and there was no vibrations !!!

best free mod for the maxima EVER !!! if you have aftermaket rims - rings are MUST !!!
Just for reference those rings are made my American Racing and part # HR72-6606
wheel bore size 2.859" / 72.62mm
vehicle hub size 2.598" / 66.06mm

BTW maxima hub size is 66.06mm

here is pic of the ring already pressed into center bore of the rim

I wouldn't call it a "mod"! They are SUPPOSED TO come with the wheels when you buy them. If they forget go and bug them for the rings!
