The Tire Tread test..

Ok I have mind block on how to test this.. I know it has something to do with a penny, but forgot what to look for lol..

Ok is the penny tire test a real way of checking the tread.. I mean is it really trust worthy or is another way better?

Just hard to believe using a penny really works good. ;/

It's all about having a convenient, accurate, and repeatable substitute for a scale. Given that coins are machine-made, don't relate the level of accuracy of the method to the value of the coin. Think in terms of of the cost of the machines that make them and the tolerances applied to them instead.

Actually, it appears that a new penny (such as the one I took at random from my pocket) may measure a few thousandths of an inch more than 2/32", which means that it can even be permitted to wear a bit over time and still be a legitimate tread-depth gauge.
