Which All-Season Tires on Stock Rims?

Hey all,

I just got my Max and the front tires are a bit worn, plus I hear they suck in snow/etc., so I'm hoping someone can recommend a good set of all-season tires. They'll be on the stock rims for now, and I'd like them to be no more than $225 a tire.

I drive in northern PA and NJ, so there is plenty of snow in the winter and rain the rest of the year. Also, I should mention that my car is an Auto and I won't be racing or anything like that.

Thanks,
Brian

I have a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S which are very good on wet and dry roads and supposed to be quite good in the snow. I switch to Nokian tires for the winter so I can't confirm this however. There's also Falken ZIEX 512 which are all season and Pirelli Zero Nero which are supposed to be a great tire. Tirerack.com is a good place to check stuff out.

same i have the pilot sport a/s on, and love them. i can take turns hard when its wet, and i have control. when i bought the car this april, the tires came with the car, so i havn't tried them on snow yet, but i heard they do well.

Based on the above criteria I too vote Pilot A/Ss but...I'm biased. I've run mine for ~1 year in various conditions and I'm pleased with the all-around performance (wet, dry, snow, ice, consistent performance in wide-ranging temps and at various speeds, etc.). "Best bang for the buck?" Maybe not but they were/are the right decision for my needs. I can't speak to runnin' them on stock SE rims as mine are mounted on OEM GLE rims (slightly different off-set).

I would suggest checking these out:
- Continental ContiExtremeContact
- BFGoodrich Traction T/A
- Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S

And staying away from Yokohama Avid H4 or V4 since they have average to poor snow traction and are not that great in the wet. When there's more than 1" of rain Maxima easily overpowers the front tires and spins them like there's no tomorrow. (But they great for an Altima 4cyl.)

However, if you don't mind spending $200 per tire then Michelin Pilot A/S is a great choice.

I have had them for 30K miles. Was really happy up until 5K miles ago, and now I can can go lose pretty easily. Have told friends and coworkers with 2003 Max to get them and they love them (so far)! I'm ordering a new set as we speak.

Cheers -

Hmm.... "plenty of snow" + "won't be racing" = Nokian WR All Weather Plus to me. Severe winter conditions rated like a winter tire (mountain & snowflake symbol), but treadwear rated to 420 and capable of year-round use. As long as you don't need the slightly sharper handling and better dry weather grip of tires like the ones mm347 mentioned, the WR will probably be your best bet in the winter. Check it out, I know Audi guys like them.

I just ordered a set of HTR+ (225/45) at tire-rack (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes) ... they are on special order in most locations but Indiana has a PO coming in.

Tires

I was in the market for about the same thing that you are looking for and i founds that the Michelin hydroedge is a good match for me. I have had them for close to 6 m and i have not had any problems what so ever out of them. They are a directional tire and i think i got the set of 4 mounted at a local shop for $500 and some change. Just my 2 cents

I just switched from YoK Avid's to Toyo Proxes 4, as I needed a really good wet traction tire, I considered the Pirelli P-zero Nero as they were' about the same price but my tire guy recommended the Proxes, they are awesome check out the reviews section:

Practically? Not really.

But like other high milage tires like the Michelin Hydroedge, the TripleTreads are not designed with performance in mind. You will notice that most good handling, performance oriented tires tend to have an "A" Temperature rating and speed ratings of "H" or higher. There is NOT a direct link between handling/performance and these two specs, but they usually go hand-in-hand.

Tires like these should be fine as long as you're willing to sacrifice some handling and response for ultra-long treadlife. I would never consider these tires if you drive the car hot and hard though. Unfortunately the ultimate tire still doesn't exist...

Triple-Treads are about the only tire you can buy that has AWESOME wet and snow handling capabilties that also packs a 80k Mile warranty. they did a shootout with the hydro-edge and the Triple-treads, and the triple-treads won. here in Utah anyways. personally the triple treads are what i would go for if i was looking for wet traction, and a long lasting tire.
