Tire advice

Hello All,

I am about to replace all 4 tires on my car as one in particular is very worn down and the others its about their time.

I'm planning on going a size up from stock 215/55/15 to 225/50/16.

I'm planning on puttin on the toyo proxes 4
( http://www.edgeracing.com/tire/990/ )

dont really know too much about tires but am trying to learn more. these tires are rated 300 tread wear? how good is that? what is the tread waear rating on our stock tired (4th Gen 15") I figured its decent since the Falkens that there is a sticky for people have said it wears fast and that has a higher tread rating than the toyos is this correct?

Also I'm looking to put some 16" rims on the car as well (time to let go of the saw blades) what specs should I look for to suit this tire? 16x7? I'm not too familiar with these number so I'd love a little explanation on them.

also an offset more than 30 looks weird on our cars? something else I heard and kidna wanted to address.

thanks a lot.

Peace

ok I don't have a lot of info on the Toyos... so I won't comment on them.... but when it comes to tread wear.... the # listed on the tire is only good for comparison with other tires of that brand.... the DOT makes the tire companys use 100 as a base line.. so a 300 tire would last 3 times as long.... only draw back is each company gets to chose its on base line tire.... so a 300 Toyo may last longer than a 400 Yoko but not as long as a 200 Goodyear.. confused yet?? ... the example I used assumes that Toyo used a 10k base for the 100, Yoko used 5k and Goodyear 20k.... as for the wheels.. a 225 is ok on a 7" wheel.... but bigger is always better ... and for the offset.... less than 30 might stick out depending on the wheel width..... I would say around 35-40 for a 7" wheel.... my 16x7.5" wheels are +40 and work great.... my 17x9's are +34 and the front lip of the wheel is even with the edge of the fender on the front

Thanks for the responce Z32drifter,

I understand more now so if Toyo uses 10K for a 100 then since its 300 rated then it would last about 30K for those tires. I'll e-mail the company to see if that is the case

so the offset is how far the tire stick out?

I was looking at some rims that were 16" and it has a +40 offset so according to what your saying this is a good combo.

so when I see 5 LUG UNIVERSAL WITH A + 40 OFFSET
(5 X 100 OR 5 X 114.3) the 5x 100 is related to the offset?

the 5x100 or 5x114.3 is the bolt pattern.... Max uses 5x114.3 or 5x4.5
the offset is the distance the hub (part that mounts to the wheel) from the center of the wheel.... so if you have a 0 offset on a 7" wheel... the wheel would have a 3.5" lip on the inside and the outside.... so if you have a +25 offset on the same wheel you would have 3" lip on the outside and 4" on the inside (25mm = 1" +/-) and note this is for example only...I have not caculated the thickness of the wheels center into the example..... and yes the example wheel you listed should work fine
