Offsets for Caliper Clearance
Offsets for Caliper Clearance
Okay so after the other day finding out that my BBK won't fit with my wheels I'm in the market for new ones.
Does the offset have anything to do with clearing the calipers? I know how offset is measured and lower offsets make the wheels stick out more. I guess I'm just asking if it affects the spoke design. Other threads I read say that rims with lips will actually have larger lips with lower offsets since the wheels are pushed out further.
I'm looking at getting the axis hiro's. This one website just emailed me back about fittment and they said the 25mm offset would fit over my 300zx calipers. I didn't tell them I had a maxima with the Z calipers because I didn't think it mattered. I really dought a rims that is 8.5" wide with a 25mm offset will fit the max.

Whether or not your wheels will clear your brakes depends on width, offset and spoke design. I believe it's safe to say that wider, lower offset wheels will be more likely to clear your brakes, but the spoke design is also very important. Rims with big lips are less likely to clear your brakes.
Depend on what kind of wheels you get ($ vs $$$$) they may offer high/med/low -disk fitments that would be more likely to clear the brakes.

heck a 25mm offset is not even a good fit for a Z32..... my Enkei RPF1s work with a +40 17x8.5 (they are on my Z) and my Halibrand cobraIII's work fine on both cars 17x9 +34.......... the problem you will have is the spoke design... you will need about 2" from the hub/mount to clear the width of the caliper... find out if Axis has or can make you a template of the inside of the wheel??? if they can you should be able to use that to check for proper clearance
I feel like if a wheel model comes in 2 different offsets, the lower of the 2 offsets has more material on the hub mounting area, which helps with caliper clearance. However, beyond that, you just need a combination of good offset and spoke design. Look for spokes the flare outward, and make sure there isn't a big "lip" where they connect to the actual rim. I had to sell off a set of 17s that wouldn't clear. My Cobra wheels clear just fine though.
Thanks guys for all the help. Would a 18" wheel clear larger calipers better compared to a 19" wheels since the 18" wheel would have the caliper at a further out point on it's spoke.
