Time for "NEW" tires, which ones are the best?

My tires are on their last leg and I need an A/S tire soon.

The Michelin 55/225/17 looks ok but the Yoko seems to have the better bang for the buck.

What do the rest of you run and why? Which tire would you guys choose for enhanced cornering, low noise, in less than desired conditions (light snow/heavy rains)? TIA

I've heard a lot of good things about the Kuhmo Ecsta 711's or 712's (can't remember) you might want to try reading an article about them. Also, the Toyo Proxes 4's are suppossed to be pretty sweet too.

If you haven't yet, check the wheel and tire section and scan thru some threads. There are a lot of opinions there.

Falken 512s. Inexpensive (around $100 each). Come in stock sizes 225/50/17 or do 235/45/17 like I do on stock rims. Nice ride, good handling (not as good as the Pilot A/S), EXCELLENT in rain and wet...good in snow also. Only downside is that they get a little bit loud when they have more than 50% wear.

Alot of guys here run the 512s, Contis, and Proxes. I wouldn't buy a Kumho, personally.

Damn there are alot of tire threads today

check out the kumho kh11 in stock size. it's been a great alternative for me so far.

i've been on yokos, dunlops, bfgs, and so far, the kumhos have been the best. quieter, smoother with the stock sidewall height, and great in the wet. i'm in so cal so haven't driven in snow with em. they're assym but oddly they can be rotated all 4 corners. about 100 each.

i've got about 20k on em so far and no noticable increase in noise. haven't lost any grip to the other tires either. btw, of the previous, yokos were the grippiest by FAR.

i say Bridgestone RE750. Bit pricey but worth the extra $30 per tire you spend on the Falkens.

Toyo T1-s are great also.

Guys, thanks for the comments/opinions.

I was able to compare recommended tire choices.

I'm now looking at the 225/45WR17 SLPirelli PZero Nero M&S.

I have the OEM GLE rims, so I don't want to go 235, as I don't believe this will fit, correct me if I'm wrong. Hopefully, 45 will go unnoticed by my wife, as she will be the main driver of this vehicle. I drive it on occasion, and when driven in corners and rain it was horrible w/new stockers and even worse with old ones.

For those wondering why I'm not leaning towards falkens and kumos. I had these on my 5 series; falkens, khumos, yokos (they wore fast). As you know falkens get very noisy after 50% wear. Kumos wear was very fast and uneven for me, plus wet grip wasn't always there.

I have never owned Pirelli tires, I may give them a try.

Keep the replies coming, as I haven't yet decided. THX

Man edge has some mean/aggressive looking tires! I like the +400 Treadwear rating, Falken has one w/360. -280 below will wear to fast, plus that wear rating is for summer tires. I need something with quality characteristics for All Seasons, mainly rain.

Toyo Proxes T1s and Falken Ziex Ze-512's are looking good. So does Toyo Proxes Fz4 and Toyo Proxes 4. Also edge prices are very competitive...

Hankook H405's

I put a set of Hankook H405's on my 2003 SE last week. We've got no snow in Minneapolis to test them yet, but here are my initial impressions:

- Got Discount Tire to match EdgeRacing.com, so they were $395 after tax with lifetime balance and rotate!
- Same amount of road noise as stock
- Absorbs sharp cracks and bumps MUCH better
- Smoother tire over roads and balanced perfectly the first time
- Wet traction is MUCH MUCH better with no hydroplaning at normal speeds in decent rain.
- I haven't cornered extremely hard on them, but so far they seem similar to the Crapenza's...ie not mushy or rolly feeling
- Dry traction is equal to the stock Crapenza's

I'll update you when/if we ever get some snow this winter.

Stach, just wanted to know if every outlet of Discount Tire gives price match?!? In that case, I want to get Goodyear Tripletred. Discount tire has it for like $110 while tirerack.com has it for $87, and onlinetires.com has it for $75 per tire.

Discount Tire

I can't speak for all Discount Tire stores, but I have read here in the forums that others have price matched at Discount Tire as well. My store would price match against any verifiable website, but they also factored in the shipping costs of that website as well (still more than fair).

Good Luck!

I know several people that have the PZero's and they love them. I already know that when I finally have enough money to buy some new tires to replace the blowtenzas that I will be getting the Pirellis.

One last question, when they price matched, did they add the mounting/balancing + disposal fee + valves charges to the price on the website ?? Or did they just added the shipping charges ?!? Thanks again.
