what is the difference between 17x7 and 17x8

Other than the wheel width. Is the ride different? Do you have to get new tires? I was just wondering why people seem to endorse 17x8.

You can run wider tires...and in the case of 5th gens...you get a lot more affordable tire choices.

Besides being able to run wider tires, a wheel that is on the wider side of a tire's fitment range will help it handle a bit better because it keeps the sidewalls more vertical and it doesn't bulge out more. Running a 225/45 tire on 17x8 would be preferred to running it on 17x7 for example.

on 17x8 you can run 235 or 245.. easily..
