I was planning on driving up to Lake Tahoe over the weekend to go skiing and I was a little worried about my tires. I have the Yokohama AVS ES100's which are high performance summer tires and I was wondering if it would be safe to drive up there considering it'll probably be snowing and really wet. Will I be okay with just chains (if needed)?

Not on the topic of tires, but will I also be okay driving in the snow with a lowered car? Thanks in advance.

 

Absolutely not. Summer tires get very hard below a certain temp, 40 degree, I think, and traction is terrible.

I drove through a freak snowstorm here in TN with summer tires last winter and vowed to never do it again.

Time rolled around this fall to get new tires...and I have all seasons. Summer tires in the snow has to have been my scariest driving experience (that combined with all the other southern drivers around me driving in the snow).

 

As said, no.

Rent a car or buy/borrow a set of winter tires, or even all-season tires, which might still stink on ice/snow though.

ill restate what they all said, a big NO.

as far as driving a lowered car in the snow, just try not to go plowing thru anything. i drove my lowered accord with a kit 2 winters and it was ok. if you dont have a kit, you should be more than ok. i drove the car in the NJ winters just like i did in the summer (with snow tires of course tho).

 

its not the tires its the driver but yea get sum all season tires if u can come up wit the mula

 

Summer tires are called summer tires for a reason.
I have all-season high performance tires and they still suck in the snow.
I'm getting a set of snow tires for next winter, and this spring I'm getting a new set of rims with summer tires.

 

all season are fine if you don't fawk around behind the wheel

rather be safe than sorry

 

Check local law before using chains. I know it's illegal in many states.

i have summer tires and i drove in the snow alittle... it BLOWS. luckily i bought winter tires with steelies... work nicely....
