Care and feeding of aftermarket rims

I'm really tempted to get a set of HP Racing Lightning rims. I really like the look with that lip on them.

Is there anything to worry about in terms of caring for them? I'm concerned that the lip will start to get scratched after a while. Or is it just a matter of trying not to use anything abrasive on them, and finishing them off with a metal polish every couple weeks?

I'd hate to get them and then have them look ghetto a year later. No I wouldn't be using them in the harsh Canadian winter, I have beater steel rims for that.

I had them on for about 5 months. Just took them off for the winter. They look as good as the day I bought them. No scratches at all. I haven't used any special wheel cleaners on them, only the car shampoo I use for the rest of the car. (MG Gold Class). Before I put them on, I used Klasse AIO on them. IMO this helps the dirt and brake dust come off easier.

I believe the lip is clear coated, so you don't need to use any metal polish on them.

Cool. I had no idea the lip was clear coated. So it sure makes sense to put down some wax on it then.

Yeah, for sure stay away from any type of metal polish. As an experiment, I tried a bit of Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish on a small area of the lip. If a metal is not clear coated, the rag will get black from the oxidation. My rag stayed white, therefore there is a coating on the lip and metal polish shouldn't be used on that type of coating.

BTW, I really like the HP Lightning rims. More pics on my home page.

Mine are the hyper-silver. But the lip is polished and looks close to chrome. The 'sides' of the spokes are dark. Check my sig and/or homepage for more pics.
