Need New Tires - Continental CH95 vs. Kumho ECSTA HP4 716 - Help!

Hello,

Driving my 2000 Maxima GLE on a set of Firestone Firehawk GTA 02 (which I regret buying) that are ready to go after about 25,000 miles. A friend recommended Kumho's and I checked them out on www.tirerack.com. I found the Kumho ECSTA HP4 716 tires which got excellent ratings and user reviews and are priced very well.

I was going to go with those until the place I called to inquire about installation costs suggested the Continental CH95 tires... the ratings were not as good as the Kumho's but the user reviews were just as good. They claim to be more durable (50,000 miles vs. 40,000 miles) than the Kumhos, yet have a lower treadwear score.

I'm not too knowledgeable about tires, as this is only the 2nd time I've ever replaced tires on a car, but I know I don't want to spend $125+ per tire on a set of Michelins or something better.

Anybody out there have experience with either set of tires? What do you suggest?

Thanks,
-Mike

I've been reading reviews on the Kuhmo ASX's and have heard that they have bad cornering. does anyone feel the same way with these tires on your max?

Are you referring to squirmish stability in the turns and very slow steering as the tires roll in the rim? Go to Sears and do this quick and dirty test. Squeeze unmounted tires' sidewalls with your thumbs (compare similar series) to see how much "give" they have. Start with the Potenza RE040s, move on to Pilot Sport A/S and then try the ASXs and the 512s to get an idea. The better handling tires will have stiff shoulders, but the cheaper tires will feel like you're squeezing a bicycle tire.
