Avon Tech M550 A/S

Anyone have any experience with these tires? They seem to be LS-V level of quietness but in an Ultra High Performance package.

Are these any good?

I was just looking at those on Tirerack's site, and they got really good ratings. Surely someone here has tried them. They don't have the best design for looks but priced fairly cheap and got good ratings.

The tread is a little weird because it is uni-directional, which brings up an interesting question. How do you rotate them?

I highly doubt that any tire with almost square -well, in this case, almost polygonal- tread blocks will be nearly as quiet as the Turanza LS-Vs with their more circular, random-shaped tread blocks.....

Where did u get the information that they were near LS-V quiet?

Just comparing the tirerack.com rating. Avon receives an 8.7 for Noise/Comfort while the Turanza gets 8.8.

Folks on here claim the LS-Vs are about as quiet as the Potenza. All the folks rating the Avon mention how quiet they are. We shall see.

I am thinking about getting these to replace my factory Toyo's, or BFG traction TA's. Only problem I can see with Avon is they are only distributed thru Tirerack, unless by some offchance a Cooper dealer would be able to get them. Cooper owns this British based tire co., and gives them credit for showing them how to make radials ! The reviews look good too.

Why the need for a Cooper dealer? Just order from Tirerack. Any Tirerack participating dealer can install. We had Yokohamas sent to a Firestone dealer.

I'm ordering a set within a week. Those Avon's got such a killer write up. I've got 18" primax 786 hypersilver rims and I'm buying a 225/45/18. that wheel combo is the exact OE tire height, so it works nice for our cars, no rubbing, and the best thing is no screwing up gear ratios

How about come back and give us your opinion when you get them. I'm not getting them until this summer.

Avon Tech500 Summer

I have Avon Tech 500 225/50/17 Summer tires. Get them if you need summer + rain tires.

I have these tires since September 2004 on my '03 Maxima. I've put about 8-10k miles on them already and they still look almost new. I LOVE these tires. I know they are not all season but they perform great in dry and wet. No sliding at all in heavy rain. Very very solid and stable ride. They are very quiet too. Cheap ...what else do you need.

They are also wide! Noticeably wider than my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (same size)
I like the Avon Tech500 much better than the Michelins. The Michelin tires may be a LITTLE more responsive when turning but they wear faster, they are very noisy and they cost $195 each. Avon Tech500 are only $125 and seem to last much longer. I'll buy them again.
I have 4 cheap winter tires on 16" wheels, so snow traction is not an issue.

I highly recommend these summer tires to anyone. They look great on the Maxima being so wide and they perform like a real hi-perf tire.

I have no personal experience with Avon 550 but i have a friend who put them on his Audi A6 and he was very pleased with their ALL-season performance. Keep in mind he has Quattro. (AWD) Great tires, he said.

Thanks for the good info, Cooper owns these guys, and sells a similar tire in stores,
it looks like the SLE, but you're right, Tirerack has a good deal.
By the way if anybody wants to know , it's pronounced 'Avun', not like the cosmetic firm.

I'm considering ordering these tires and curious on how much is typically charged for mounting and balancing tires that you bring into the store, vs. buying from them? Discount Tires quoted me $23 ea. for if I bring in tires from another source, vs. $10 if I buy their tires, which are a lot pricier than this Tire Rack bargin.

Tirerack lists dealers in your area and how much they charge.

Don't try the Falken 512s then. What did you replace the Avons with?

Really, that is not what any of the folk who have bought them have said. How many miles did you have on them?

Funny, did you really buy Avon? ... i have the same car, 2003 Maxima SE ...i drive like crazy in dry and wet and my Avon Tech500 are amazing. I've had them for thousands of miles. They are just a little softer than Michelin Pilot Sport A/S which i also have. Avon are not bad tire at all...they are great, especially when they are only $125 in OEM size. 10x better than the OEM Bridgestone tires.
I've had Falken 512 before...and they were way way softer. I would buy Avon again and again. My 2 cents...

I would consider these for sure, but it seems they aren't available in my size through Tirerack, at least. I need 235/40/18.

I have a set of AVON ZZ1 on the max and they are great all around tires. This tire is only sold in european countries. My next tire will be the AVON ZZ3 if I can get a set, they are replacing the AVON ZZ1's. GO to AVONTYRES.COM and check them out.

Well, I pulled the trigger on this deal tonight. We have been saturated with rain the last few days and on the way home the car would skip to the side as I went through runoff that was going across the road.

Seems like the last few weeks the tires have been more noisy than normal and harder. I thought maybe they had too much air in them, but they are at the normal PSI. Guess they are just getting worn out.

Just Tires said I had 6/32 tread left but the penny test shows otherwise. Tires should be in this week. I'll give my review then.

I just got a set to replace my OEM RSAs. On my way home from having the tires mounted, there was a flash flood warning and cars spun out on the interstate everywhere (no lie). These things were incredible. I could not have been more comfortable. There are like having flippers on your car. Actually they are a very smooth quiet riding tire, too. I think you will be pleased.

Going Monday to have them mounted. Are these tires wider than the OEM? Just measuring the two across the tread, the OEM are about 7" wide and the Avons are 9". Maybe it's because they aren't on the car yet, but they definately look wider.

Avon Tires

I also pulled the trigger, and bought mine last week from TireRack. So far so good. I've taken them up to the mountains in snow today they were good, not too much of a challenge but some light snow. They handle better than anything else I've had on the car including the Toyos I had on since new. Of course I had the original tires way too long, and as they wear they don't work as well. My SE rims took the 215 r55 16 stock, and replaced w/ same size Avon 550 AS ,good in rain, and we're getting lots of that right now in the lowlands of Western Wa. Mounting was $70.00 including Wa. disposal fee, and tax. No tax on the tires shipped right to Dependable Wheel in Renton, very good little shop.
I'm happy !

Discount Tire can get a hold of these tire also; probably from Tire Rack. I had the local DT store order four 225 50 R17s for me yesterday. $603 installed.

$127 vs $117 at Tire Rack
When you consider you are no paying shipping, it makes the extra $10 not so bad. Unfortunately I have to pay tax. Then again if I brough the to Discount Tire to have them installed, the installation would cost more than double.

So $603+easy process= Happy me

Preliminary Review:

Wow! Double Wow!! Never thought a 17" rim could ride so good. The tire is definatley wider than the OEM Potenza. Even though they are the same size (225 mm) the Avon has a wider shoulder, about 1" on either side over the stock tire.

Coming home from the install, the ride is extremely quiet. With the OEM, going over a crack in the street caused a sharp vibration through the car....these tires mute that very well. On the street they seem to have the same grip as the OEM tires.

Clouds are off in the distance today and for the first time...I'm hoping for rain. We'll see how they handle after braking in for a few hundred miles. Will report back after that.

Oh, and for anyone in Raleigh, NC or surrounding areas I'd recommend going to see Kevin at http://www.mmautowerks.com/. He is a tirerack dealer/installer who mainly does work for car clubs. Kevin is a auto-officionado as well and runs an extremely clean shop.

I just had these tires installed, they handled Friday's rain very well. These tires are much wider than the OEM Potenzas and handle much better all around.

Keep in mind, these are about 2 inches wider because they have a bigger shoulder than stock. I'll take a pic and post later today.

Sorry haven't gotten around to the pics yet, maybe this weekend. Another update on the tires:

(app. 500 miles on new tires)
Wet Traction:

Wow. These tires are near perfect, though I never had a problem with my old tires in the dry...they were getting a little noisy toward the end. Today we finally got some rain. The OEM tires never had a problem on rain covered roads, it was the runoff or puddles that would cause the whole car to side step. Today I drove down a particular street that proved quite treachorous with the OEM tires...no problems. I didn't notice a difference between dry and wet with the Avon tires. I even accelerated down the street, something I was fearful to do before.

I can't comment on starting from a stop. I never had a problem with the OEM tires slipping from a stop unless I rolled over the white strip at certain intersections and took off on top of it.

The Avons tend to kick up a bit of spray too. Turning into my parking space this morning (around 5 to 10mph) as I turned the wheel through the lot I noticed a spray coming up to roof level from the tires. I guess they are doing their job. Quite pleased with these tires.
