Best 17" tire in the $100-$125 range? (Leaning towards Proxes 4)
Sorry if this has been posted a thousand times. I have been a member for years but I have never 'stepped foot' in this tire forum.
I am looking for a good set of 235-45-17 tires. Good balance between price, wear, performance, ride and quietness.
I have (now bald) Yokahoma A32s right now and had no complaints with them. But the A32s are now deceased and I was thinking of trying something different.
As of now I am leaning towards Toyo Proxes 4. I have a best price of $110 (+ $10 + tax) each.
All opinions welcome please. Thanks.

I don't think you'd go wrong with the Proxes. I'm a little partial now because mine are on order. If you order them from a place that doesn't stock them, but has to order them, you will have a slight wait. My local tire man called me this AM to tell me they are on a national backorder, meaning two weeks wait time at least. I've had Toyos before and really liked them.

Thanks guys, I think I will go ahead and place that order. The guy said about 2 business days Doc... but who knows, that could become 2 weeks after I pay. That's fine, I'm in no hurry.

I know there are some other tires out there in the same range, but I can't honestly give you a good feel for them. Kumho, Falken and Nitto have similarly priced tires from what I know. I hope your tires come before mine do. I figure the reason mine are so backed up is because my tire guy doesn't keep them in stock and had to order direct from Toyo. GL.
There are two u have not mentioned:
First is the Fuzion ZRi which is yet another member of the Bridgestone/Firestone family....very highly rated by Tirerack and with many good reviews. I've seen the tire up close and personal when I was getting my wheels balanced a couple weeks ago and they look really nice...
Second is Sumitomo HTR+...I've some friends with that tire & they love it.
Now, for just a few bucks more ($135 at Tirerack), you can get the Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S......now THAT's a tire.....check out the survey results...

Thanks Galo. I went ahead and ordered the Proxes 2 days ago. They should be here today or tomorrow (we'll see...). I probably didn't do enough homework and yeah, there may be a better tire out there but the way I looked at it is I am getting a good tire at a good price. I did read a few reviews and Toyo seemed to always be at/near the top. I got prices ranging from $120 to $170 so I think my $110 is a good price. I'll let you guys know how they are. I still need to install my suspension on my '99 so I am doing this a little backwards. I'll have the 4x4 look with low profile tires for a week or two, gotta love that. I'm also so anxious to put the SC on my '99 (I'll have it completely off the '96 tonight) I may just be boosted with the 4x4 look.

Well, the wait has begun - lol. When I ordered them last Tues, he told me they would be in last Thurs. or Fri. On Fri. he said Mon. or Tues (today or tomorrow). Tomorrow he'll probably say Wed. or Thurs...... :I

Well, they actually did come in on Tuesday. So my total wait was just less than 1 week. So, sorry Doc, I didn't experience the 2+ week 'National Backorder' you did. Did you ever get yours? What do you think? I haven't actually installed mine yet because I don't see the point until I lower my car. But as soon as I have a review, I will share.
Still waiting, brother. Since I didn't order them from a place that stocks them, it's taking a little while. I'm not lowered either, but I will be putting mine on right away. No doubt the lowered look is a better look, but I'm not that impassioned about the whole 4x4 talk that goes on here. Some guys have money to waste whenever they want, I don't. I would love to put a ton of work and money into my Max, but it isn't my reality.

I hear you. If your lowering is far off then sure put on your new rims/tires right away. But I am so close to putting on my shocks/springs, I'll just wait. I can live with the 'decent' 5-spoke SE rims a little longer. I don't car too much for the look of plus sized rims and low profile tires on a "4x4" Max. And since I already have the parts lying around, it isn't money, it's just time.

I never knew figuring out what the best tire for the buck for my Maxima would be so difficult! I've read and read, done two weeks worth of research trying to make sure I make an educated decision that will best fit my needs. If the Tire Rack would just carry Toyo, and compare them all side by side, it would make it a lot easier. I'm wanting a tire that is an all season, good performance but resonably high mileage. I wanted min. of 40K mi. which is about 2 yrs, but would like more. I'm considering Toyo's TPT since it's mileage warranted for 65K mi. by Toyo. The Proxes 4 looks like a better performer but I don't know what kind of mileage I would get with them. Any idea? I had ordered Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S but canceled it an hour later when I read story after story of regular people that said they got terrible tread wear on this tire, many way under 20K of regular commuting driving. That scared me away from this tire. This car will be driven by my wife 97% of the time, and we don't corner very hard, just drive in Dallas traffic and on vacations all over.
Best price I've gotten on TPT's are $118 ea. for 235/45/17, or $110 for Proxes 4's. Anybody know life expectancy of the Proxes 4??

I get your meaning on where you are at with your whip. I'd wait until the lowering happened if I were that close, too. I figure I will have a unique whip of my own riding 'high' on low profies. Not too many guys riding way up when they have no profiles on the rubber...lol. My guy has a family owned shop in business for at least two generations, so he isn't directly affiliated with any major or minor company/distributor. He works with them all and basically keeps his overhead down by ordering needed tires when it applies, like in my case. I'm not too stressed over the wait, though. I am getting the tires for $150/tire. After mounting and balancing + taxes it will run me $675. With him I always get a guarantee and free rotating and balancing for the life of the tire. I'm getting 235/40/18's to wrap on my brand new Murano wheels.
Today, I put on Falken 225/50/17's... I only road around for 5 minutes after throwing them on and i love them... I didnt take them on the highway yet and pick up speed but so far so good... I paid $100 each mounted and balanced but thats from my friends tire shop... Alot of sites list them as $96 without the mounting and balancing from the little research that i did..
After all my research here and elsewhere on net and calling lot's of tire shops, decided to go with the Toyo Proxes 4 as well. Hopefully they will give some decent tread life like I read about time after time, told that as well by the Toyo tire guys. I'll report back when I get some miles on them.

Hey guys. Well, my friend (The Wizard) and I did my rear suspension and put on the rear Proxes 4s. I drove to work today (about 8 miles) but I didn't push it or anything so I have nothing to report right now. But we should have the fronts done by mid-week.
(Wanna talk about a funny look? I have a 2 finger gap with 17" rims in the back and a 6 finger gap with stock 16"s in the front!).
Bry, if I had to guess, I'd say you would get about 30-40,000 from a set of Z rated tires such as the Proxes 4s. Most likely 40k, if you drive the way you said you do. However, although I don't know what the numbers mean, you can always compare the 'Treadwear rating' as you shop. The Toyos have a rating of 300 UTQG.

Just a lil update on my new Falkens... I drove them on the highway this weekend... Got up to 75 miles an hour and they feel pretty good... I also hit a sick pot hole in the wonderful NYC streets and they held up (thank god)... As I look around on the site i think i got an amazing deal at $100 bucks each...

Well, I would trust that any tire can go 75 and I would trust any tire wouldn't blow up in a pot hole......the question is: how do they handle around turns at mach speed?!!!

Im trying for Pirelli PZero Nero M/S tires. They are a tad more expensive, but I hear good things about them. I need something that has a little snow traction. I wish I lived in California so I could use summer tires all the time!

I think so rbrown, yes. They may be 7"s, definately not 8"s but I am 95% sure they are 7.5"s.
I didn't know any better when I bought my current 24 pounders 4-5 years ago. I am currently shopping for some lighter rims (15-18 lb). I'll still stay with 17" because I think it is the best balance for handling, comfort, looks, price (and tire price). I'll either have my just-bought Proxes transferred or I'll just leave them on my current rims and place them on my '96 and buy a new set of Proxes for the new rims for my '99. But anyway, I'll probably go with 7.5" for the new rims too.

O.k., The Wizard and I finally finished my front suspension (did it over two nights, Wed. and Thurs.) so I was able to install my Proxes as we buttoned her up. Well, as far as looks, they are a good-looking tire, I have to admitt. The sidewall pattern is cool and the tread almost looks like fire. Anyway, I could have told you that when they were off the car. O.k.,with them on the car...... well, I only drove them to work this morning. 8 miles. And most of that 8 miles doesn't allow me to 'cut loose'. And keep in mind I am also evaluating the new suspension at the same time. But I will say this much. The road/tire noise at highways speeds was inaudible. And I was able to take one 90^ turn at any speed I wanted. I pushed it pretty hard and went through the turn pretty fast. No squeeling! So I will continue to push and push and I will report back.

Well, I have had them for a few weeks now so I can give an accurate reveiw. In short, I like them a lot. No complaints. Well... other than leaving black tire tracks on my driveway... no complaints. I think it stopped doing that though. The Toyos are comfy, quiet, handle well in the rain (yes it rained one day, gave me a chance to take a turn real fast, no sliding) and handle real well on dry pavement. Very grippy. When I had my stock rims/tires, I lost traction on hard launches. Now I just launch. I even have the supercharger on and I still have launch traction. I can recommend these.
