although i just got brand new tires, i think i may know what i want to replace them with in the distant future....over the 4th of July weekend my dad, my stepmom, and I drove to San Diego in my stepmom's Audi A4...her car has the stock 235/45/17 tires on it still with 23k miles and when we were driving there, my stepmom was driving and she sort of dozed off at the wheel anyways, she ended up kinda going out of the lane and hit those huge grooved 'drunk bumps' and it made a real loud noise...at that, she snapped her head up and jerked the wheel pretty hard...there was nobody around, thank god, but we were going about 85 mph and when she jerked it, we went across the two lanes then she cut back and forth real hard to try and regain control...well we ended up fine and i have never in my life seen such grippy tires...they did not break loose at all, and they didn't even make any noise when she was practically doing a slalom at 85....the tires are the pirelli P6's and since i was here last and her car had about 10k miles, i haven't noticed any more wear on the tires at all....they are also very quiet on the highway as well (although it may just be that audi sound proofing)

has anybody else had any experiances like this? if so, what kind of tires were on the car and how well did things end up? I've never taken any sharp turns like that in my car over 50, so i wouldn't know how my tires would do, but i would think that at those speeds, the tires would break loose or at least make some kind of noise...

 

From what I see the P6 is nothing special. Not even one of the better high performance tires.

Maybe the driver or the car's susp was more a factor than the tires

 

that's interesting..the suspension on that audi is really good (waaay better than my max) but i would think that tires would come into play a bit more, especially at those speeds...they just didn't seem to want to let go like most tires do... weiiird....

EDIT: and it wasn't the driver! she's definitely not skilled in this department.

 

I have falken 512s and they are great.... wait you have them too, are you complaining about them? They are great tires especially for how much I paid for them.

 

She has AWD and that is why the car handled the way it did. The handling on an audi is extraordinary compared to a maxima. You could put the worst tires in the world on an audi and outhandle a maxima. My brothers feels like it is on rails. You move the wheel an inch and you are in the next lane before you can even blink (literally). If she was in a maxima the rear end would have slid out and she would have gone sideways at 85.
