Hey all, I am buying some new tires, and have narrowed it down to the Falken FK451. I found a stellar deal on them in a 245/35-18, and wanted to know what anybodys experience with that tire has been. I currently have 225/45-18s, and these would be wider with about the same size sidewall. Any feedback on them would be appreciated!

 

235-40 or 245/40

35s IMO, too short. ~1" smaller, and your speed will be off by a larger margin than what it was stock .

 

225/45 = 45% of 225mm = 101.25 millimeters = 3.98622047 inches

245/35 = 35% of 225mm = 78.75 millimeters = 3.1003937 inches

That is a much smaller widewall. Go with 245/40 as suggested above ^^^^^^^

 

Here is the info that I got from miata.net tire calculator. A 235/40-18 is 25.4 inches tall, with a 3.7 inch sidewall. The 245/35-18 is 24.8 inhces tall iwth a 3.4 inch sidewall. Speedo will be off by 2.6%.

My current setup is a 225/40-18, which is 25.1 inches tall with a 3.5 inch sidewall. Would the tenth of an inch on the sidewall be noticeable?? I don't mind the height of the sidewall on my current tires, I do like the extra widthe that the 245/35-18 adds. The speedo diff is only 1.3% of what I currently have. Now I ordered my tires today, they are about $40 cheaper for the set than for 245/40-18's, shich are the other tire I considered. They are both significantly cheaper than a 235/40-18, which many may consider the ideal size.

Quick question. I have 225/40/18 on my GramLights right now. The rims are a 18"X8". I wanted to get a set of 235/40/18, which is the size that I have on my G35C's, but is there any benefits/downfalls to running a 245/40/18 on a 8" wide rim? There's a guy selling a set of Dunlops (245/40/18) for pretty cheap. I know you CAN run a 245, but is there a definitive recommended size. Tire pro's step in please.

 

I would have gotten 235s or 245s. I personally wouldn't mount 225s on a 8" wide rims because tires are narrow.

 

Yeah, I bought the rims with those tires on them already. The bad thing is that the tires are in really good condition still yet. But, there's a guy selling a set of 245/40/18's. I'm thinking about getting them. Any pro's/con's to going with a 245/40/18 as compared to a 235/40/18?

 

Well, the company I ordered from called, they were down to three 245/35-18 FK451's. So, they gave me the same price on a set of 234/40-18 Kumho Ecsta MX's. They are being shipped out today. I will likely be much happier with that size, and that tire ought to be good for the occassional autocross too. Oh, I got them for $90 each!

I had to promise not to tell, they had a special on the FK451 which I ordered, and they were out so they matched the price on the Kumho MX. The MX is actually on sale for $110 each in that size, which is still a very good deal.

 

245/40 is what I have and it's what you need

 

225's on 8" wheels is perfect. Hamman and other tuners sell wheel/tire combos with 225 on 9" wide.

 

I have 225's on the front for my GramLights and for my G35C's. Both sets of rims came with this size tire. I PERSONALLY, don't like the 225's on there. Some people like that stretched, rubber band look on their wheels, but not me. I have 235/40's on my rear wheels on the G35C's, and it looks much better. The wheel actually has some protection from curb damage, where as the 225's would eat up any curbs. I guess to each his own.

then i guess you don't know ****.
Just saying that it's not uncommon, and 225 is great on that size wheel. Putting a wider tire on there creates sloppier handling and reduced transient response.
