I've come to the conclusion that the reason why I bent my wheels were that the Proxes 4's played a significant part. I've got 1 Nitto NT 555 and 3 Proxes 4's on my Miglia's and noticed that the sidewall of the Proxes look too soft for a wheel this size. The sidewall seems to roll tucked to the ground, while the NT 555's are at perfect stance. Could this be the reason my rims didn't hold up to my driving and the harsh roads? Anyone with 19's please chime in, and let me know what type of tires you are riding on, size would be good also. I'm considering keeping my Privat's and giving them another chance with different tires. What do you guys think?

btw, currently running 245/35/19 w/38 psi

If you change to 235/40/19's you will gain a bit more sidewall and it really does not affect your speedo.

But yes, I would think soft sidewalls are killing your rims.

Edit: you might have a hell of time finding that size I guess, the only one I found on tirerack was $260 Potenza RE050A's.

 

i have been running 19 evo5s with proxes 4 245/35/19 and have had no real issue except my brain of a wife hitting a curb.

 

Right now im running Falken 451's in a 245/35 19 it has a rim protection rib so the over all sidewall is pretty sturdy.

Why dont you buy the other 3 Nittos if you are happy with them?

 

DAMN! I'm already paying 180 a tire for these 4's. I'm probably going to end up switching to the NT555s and lord knows how much those are going to be. I wonder if the 40 series will fit without rubbing. I just dropped to s-techs Wednesday night, and it's pretty low. My offset is 40 so I might be alright.

I probably will, I've never had Nittos but have heard rave reviews on them. I've only had this one used Nitto for about a week.

 

Ever thought that maybe it's the fact that you have 19's that caused the problem? Hell, I bent one of my Honda's 16's with 205/55/16 Pilot A/S on them, and those have a very stiff sidewall.

Lower sidewall always runs the risk of rim damage, no matter what tire.

 

Also the fact that you have to run fairly high pressures with the low profile sidewall compounds the problem. There's less room for absorbing the energy impacted onto the tire when you hit a bump.

 

Wait, are you still on the Miglia's? If so, that's your problem - not the tires. Mille's are known to be made of very soft metal.

 

That's a definate, but I'm just trying to give more protection to the wheels and take the brunt of impacts off of them some. I'd really rather keep them, and if I'm going to do that, I might as well trying to get some stiffer rubber.

 

I stay around 36 - 38 and check them regularly.

Are the toyo's re enforced tires? if they are 38psi is the perfect psi to run.

 

I'm not sure to be honest with you. What's that do for it? Is it somewhat like the RunFlat material used?

 

The reinforced tires have stronger sidewalls, I've been running the nitto 555's for a while now with no problems. I've hit potholes very hard without damage to the tire or wheel. The 555's are a reinforced tire also. The only time I have damaged my wheels or tires was because of wrecking my car. When I totaled my 00 max, I bent 2 of my rims and popped 1 tire, but that was plowing over a curb sideways at about 60mph. The 555's should run you about 180.00-200.00 a tire.

 

Thanks man, that secures my train of thought. I had a feeling that the sidewalls of the 555's heldup pretty good. I'm glad to hear you input, and will be making that purchase. Price is about the same so I don't feel too bad.

edit: on your cardomain it says you're running 235/45/19. is this correct? also do you have any rubbing issues?

I'm on 245/35/19 proxes 4 and have never had a problem with them. Sidewall looks pretty sturdy to me compared to my friends VW Corrado who has 40 series Dunlop's. At times it looks like his tires are 30 series because of the soft sidewalls.

How are the roads in Germany?

 

Not to bad. Never been to NC so can't really compare.
Germany still has coblestone roads in parts, but I'm creeping over them.
At high speeds on the autobahn, pavements really smooth.
Innercity is not as bad as say NY, but I've taken some pretty good hits
from some bumps.

 

i dunno if this is true or not, i had 18" EV-S's 18 or so months ago, and i slammed into some potholes, and those wheels held strong, tires too. I was running Kumho Ectsa Supras, and those wheels really took a beating and never showed a sign of a bend or bubbled tire.

After about 6 months of my 19" Hiros on RE750s, id say they are good tires too. Rim gaurd and also have really wacked some potholes and everything is okay. Im starting to believe its more of how you hit the pothole, not so much actually hitting it, but i could be wrong. A lot of times i see a pothole but im going too fast or i have nowhere to go, so i just hold the wheel tight and hit it dead on. I believe that its when we swerve and just clip the hole, or catch it when our wheel is at an angle, that it causes damage.

That's a good point KC, my damages have been caught hitting things at a bad angle, and I guess it tags it just right.

 

I have an 03 Maxima SE running 19x8.5" Maya/Trafficstar Wheels (DAZZ Imports them from http://www.river-side.co.jp/ in Japan. I am running 215/35 Toyo Proxes 4's. My car is fitted with Cattman/Progress Coilovers. My car is extremely low. I have had to have each rim repaired at least once. The Proxes 4 has the rim protector feature....but when tire sidewall is not more than 1.25 - 1.50 high.....the side wall has to be very stiff. BTW...I usually run tires at about 40 -42 psi.....

Just get some 18's. My car rides so much better w/ the meatier tires. The 19's look better, but not good enough for me to dred driving my car somewhere

 

I have a 2000 Max and I run a 235/35 19 Nitto555 on my Max and I havent run into any problems, and I run between 38-40 psi.

Few months ago they was doing road work on my daily route to and from work and I couldnt advoid this one night where the uneven paved the road and bent the front rim.

Ive been debating to go with a 235 series tire and Nitto's .
The tires I had were Nakyeema(sp?) anyways these tires are made from korea and they are garbage. the sidewalls on the outter start cracking ..anyways I called around looking for Nittos 555 in 235-35-19s..

Anyone has a good hook up on the internet for these tires?

 

hmm maybe thats why my last set of rims got bent 3 times. i was running 235/35/19 toyo Proxes 4's.... and im still running em. I guess ill just leave em on for now. Can't afford another set of 19" tires.

 

I can probly do the 555's for about 180.00 plus shipping. I'll have to check my cost on tuesday. I can sell any tire 10% above cost, but sometimes internet priceing is hard to beat.

 

Thanks for the confirmation guys. Nitto's looks like they are the way to go for me. I'm usually a spirited driver anyways, so I'm hoping the 555s are able to keep up with my pace. SR20DEN, sloppymax, blu, all praise these tires as being a good combo to go with. I might as well try them out, I have nothing to lose.

I do not have any pics. I have since traded that car in for a 2009 Maxima SV. I plan to fit this car with VIP Modular VR-08's. 8.5" front, 9.5" rear. Both with extreme offsets. Full VIP style. I will post pics when complete.
