Tire Help

I currently have the stock tires/rims on my car, 245/45/18

I want to purchase 5 new tires, and use the same rims, but I'm unsure of what to go with. I want an all season tire with high performance all around, winter/summer etc. They have to be able to deal with the crappy winters that we have up here in Boston. I was looking on tirerack and it came up with 4 Ultra High Performance tires that met my needs. They are:

Continental $161 each
ContiExtremeContact

Dunlop $163 each
SP Sport 5000 M

Michelin $251 each
Pilot Sport A/S

Pirelli $220 each
PZero Nero M&S

If I want to use the same rims, do I have to go with one of these (being exactly the same size as my stocks, 245/45/18), or can I go with others? I definitely want to use my stock rims. If it's out of these 4, which should I go with?

Thanks!

I've heard good things about the Michelin Sport A/S tires, but they are pricey. I am FINALLY (after nearly 6 months) my cracked RSA tires replaced and am going with Dunlop Sport 5000M's, since I've also heard other members say that they were good (I think Nismo mentioned this at one point). Although I don't know how they relate to the Michelins or the others.

Good luck, and let us know what you go with and how you like them.

On Tirerack, you skipped one great all weather Ultra High Performance Tire.

Do they offer that tire in 245/45/18, and furthermore, to use the exact same rims, does it have to be that exact same size? I would assume so.

Agree. Love the pattern also. Can't wait to melt those RSA truck tires and get the g-force from Costco.

How much snow did you get in bean town last month?

"BF Goodrich g-force KDW-II tires are not intended to be driven on snow."

Yes, they are rated and sized as OEM direct replacements. I have 18's so I'm sure. Price is also a double bonus...

I have driven these tires in snow from VA. to New York. Maybe since most snow I have driven on turns to slush and water by the time I have driven over it I have not noticed any problems. Again these tires have excellent wet handling characteristics.

If you do live in a harsh snow environment, I agree with other members and get the tires that best fit your environment for performance and safety. If snow gets too deep in my area as it sometimes does, I do have a plan B.

I ended up going with the Continental ContiExtremeContact's. They're affordable, and they have awesome reviews everywhere I've looked, especially tirerack. For what I need them for, which is basically any condition up here in Boston, they seem to be the best.

On tirerack they were 161 a piece, and I needed 5, so after shipping it came to like 862 dollars, or somewhere aound there. I could have gone with that, but then when I got them I would have to pay separately to have them mounted etc, so I called Town Fair tire and asked about the tire. They said they could have it in stock within 1 business day, but they are 269 dollars a piece. I asked them what the price would be if I bought them elsewhere and came to them for the mounting etc, they said they would not mount someone elses tires, and asked why I was asking. I told them I found them on tirerack for 161/each + shipping, they said they would match the price, and then add on for mounting/alignment etc which ended up coming to 1089+tax, so 1143.45. So, just coming back from a cruise and being in the bartering mood that Jamaica put me in, I said is there any way you can do 975? He put the manager on the phone, he did some numbers, and said he could do 975+tax, which came to like 1030 or something. I said I have the credit card in my hand right now, I'm ready to buy them, I can give you the number right now if you can get it down to 1000 even, after tax. He put me on hold, came back and said, well you know we're already knocking off so and so, blah blah blah, you know, that whole thing. I said that's fine, I understand and thank you very much for your time. He was like wait wait, you know what, we can do 1000 after tax. So I saved myself about 150 bucks, plus I get all the perks from buying from them. Free flat repair for my entire family, warranty, tire rotations, etc etc. Not too bad I guess.
