225/50/17, help me decide what tire!

So I'm in the market for a cheap, quiet, and decent traction 225/50/17 tire...my main priority is price, and a comfortable quiet ride....traction is not too important...not as important as a comfortable ride as I don't plan to race with these tires...oh yeah, wet traction doesn't matter either...I live in california...and I also drive as slow as a gramma when it does rain...

so here are some choices I looked up on tire rack..

Kumho ASX = $87
Kumho SPT = $93
BFG G Force Sport = $95
Falken 512 = $88
Toyo Proxes 4 = $106

I don't really want to venture too far into price...I wanna keep it as low as possible (i know, i know, you get what you paid for)...but at the same time, I don't plan to race or do anything crazy with these tires...i'm not asking too much for a tire...so I'm sure there can be a compromise...

anyway, so far Falken 512 has caught my eye becuz of the price...and the good reviews it gets (also some bad)...also the BFG G force sports have caught my eye as well...as they are rated #3 on tire rack by customer surveys...and also the Kumho ASX becuz of the price...and it's rated #5 on tire rack...

The Falken ST-115 is said to be one of the quietest tires on the market.

Check out Tirerack

I am also in the market for needing new tire, a lot of my friend told me to check out Tirerack.com for reviews and pricing. If your not looking for racing tires I have found a great set of tires, that even I will be purchase sometime next week.

Yokohama Avid V4s. I have heard nothing but good rating on these tires, better then the tires I have on my car now which are the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4.

**Also a lot of tire companies purchase from Tire rack, so if you look up the tires you want and print the page out and take it into the store they will sell the tires to you for the price you found online not the price of what they sell it as in the store, keep that in mind.***

I got an email from someone local asking me if I want his RE 92. Hope that wasn't u. haha. Lemme kno if u want his email.
BTW, Tirerack is having a sale on SO-3 that's priced in the upper part of your range. Or, goto Discount Tire Center .com and look up the Kumho ASX that are about $95/tire installed.

is everything on DTD website SHIPPED & INSTALLED? i notice their prices are ALOT higher than tire rack...i always thought its becuz shipping is included (where as tire racks isn't)...but EVEN with the shipping charges calculated on the final price of tire rack's price, it still comes up cheaper...in some cases, still alot cheaper...perhaps its cuz DTD's price are already included with ship and install?

It seems like summer tires do not wear as easily as all-season tires, so it might be a good idea to also include reasonably priced summer tires on your list.

I'm not sure about ride comfort or road noise but hankook r-s2 or Kumho MX should last you quite a long time and should not cost you an arm an a lag.

Yeah, when you place your reservation online, the invoice is sent to the store you specify. They will call you when the tire is in, and you pay when you install. There is no shipping charge. The price includes everything: mount, balance, disposal, taxes, and anything else. And it's lifetime balance, along with lifetime tire repair.

I put 235/45-17 Pirelli P6s on my 2002 and they are great. I've put about 10K on them and they still look new. I actually think they make the car look better than it did with the Bridestones. The P6s don't squeal like the stock Bridgestones did, and they are quiet and smooth as silk on the highway. $98 each on Tirerack, although I actually got mine from America's Tire.

Thanks. Steven, I've had the Falken 512s and the Proxes 4's and there really isn't a comparison between the two.

really? hmm...i'm sure the proxes are a much better tire...but do you still recommend them to me? even after looking through my "needs" from a tire?

1. Cheap cost.
2. Quiet tire
3. Comfortable tire
4. Traction isn't too important

If that list reflects the order of importance, then, the Falken may be a good option actually.

I've tried the 450's. Pretty decent tires for regular use and spirited driving, but not sticky enuf for autox or track use. They lasted pretty long, and are quieter than stickier tires.

I'm looking at replacing my tires for my 2003 SE. Why I came to this forum in the first place, to see what "alternative" tire sizes I could use. I'm seeing people say, but without any explicit references, that the stock SE rims can be mounted with 235/45/17's. Is this really true? Aren't the rims 7" and not 7.5" as specified by the wider tire size?

For great tire deals, follow this link:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....+Pole+Position

The tires advertised at the link given are closeout items, and are some of the best bridgestones available!! Browse and weep!

Now, I've helped you. You can help me. Can I, or not, just mount 235/45/17's on my car, the ones shown in the link? I'd get 225/50/17's but they're not on special you see.

And, what does the 235/45/17 get you, an uglier wheel well? The diameter seems to be almost the same, so I'd imagine it to be almost unnoticeably different?

Start here and see where it might take you. Plenty of info in it and the other threads linked.

p.s. Nice closeout prices for the S-03s, $117 for 235/45R17 is a bargain.

The difference between a 225/50 and a 235/45 depends on the manufacturer. You can do the math all you want as a guideline, but unitl you look up the revs per mile or other specs quoted by the manufacturer, you're really just ball-parking the number. I think my 235/45 Pirelli P6's look MUCH better than the stock 225/50 Potenzas did, and no rubbing. Even though the mfr shows the range of 7.5-9" widths, I can tell you that A LOT of 5th gen Max owners have 235/45's on their car and you won't hear one of them saying "I wish I didn't do that".

S-03 would be a great choice....thats if I was planning to race out my tires...or drive aggressively...but I:m not looking for those features from the tire Im shopping for...just something nice and quiet...comfortable...and DECENT grip...s-03 is overkill...even at a closeout price of $117...

emm... a quick question...
I am thinking of getting the Falken 512's..
Right now I have Pilot Sport A/S's on all 4s but cant afford to get them again... I really need the front two to be replaced...
So I was thinking of putting the two new tires on the front and keep the two good ones in the back.... please advise...

My primary concern is wet/snow traction as I live in Boston.... second is $$, third is quietness

I have had both the 512s and Proxes 4s, While both are good tires I recommend the Toyos hands down.
