ive read so many opinions on this subject ... is it safe ?.. how many people are running it ?

Yea that is fine. There should be no problems as that is what tire rack recommends.

many people run them without any problems, but I personally prefer to stay on the safe side, as officially it's out of spec.

depends on tire manf....they recommend diffrerent size wheels for their tire....but i am also running 235/45s are 7" rims...no issues here

I've done it with no issues for over 20k miles. Just make sure they are properly inflated.

I have run that size (235/45/17) for over 60k miles... No problems what so ever.

Yes, I drive my car pretty hard also.

235/45/17 no probs either, ran all year and I found I had better traction and stability then stock size.

no problem with doing that.. just not recommended. better to run 225 width but 235 is ok..
