So I am still new here so I am trying to figure out the best tire for my money. I want an all season with my 17 inch factory rims. I dont plan on buying new rims or anything so these will be my year round tires. I dont want to spend a ton of money. Please let me know guys thanks!

I shopped for two years, and in the end - bought exactly what I SWORE I wouldn't buy: Falken Ziex 512's.

I tried to get the yoko avid v4's, but they were hard to come-by locally, and TiresPlus (the only yoko dealer in-town) wanted too much for them. In the end, I needed them quick, and couldn't wait for tire-rack to ship 'em.

Everything is based on your driving preferences, habits, needs, and budget. But I would go this route based on my own RESEARCH:

1. Best Bang for the Buck all-around, all-weather tire: Falken Ziex 512
2. Best Mid-priced All-season performance tire: Toyo Proxes 4 / Yoko Avid V4
3. Best Touring / All-season tire: Toyo Proxes TPT
4. Best HIgh-Perf All-season tire: Pirelli P-Zero Nero (non-stock size) or MIchelin Pilot A/s in Stock size.

There are many others that are very similar and/or equally adequate, but these would be MY choices.

I can recommend Bridgestone RE960 AS. I have them on my car and soon to go on the wife's car. The OEM size for the SE is 225/50-R17. I had the opportunity this past summer to go a Bridgestone Drive & Learn. There I got to drive the RE960AS back-to-back against the Michelin Pilot Sport AS. Both tires are good, but I felt that the Bridgestones has the upper hand in the wet.

Go to http:\\www.tirerack.com.

You can enter your car and/or tiresize and they will show all the tires that fit your car. Additionally, they have customer reviews of the tires and a rating system, so there is some really good feedback there on tires from all manufacturers.


Make sure that the tire you get has the load capacity to carry your car at a pressure the tire can handle. The RE960AS easily carries the Max, but it does so at 33 psi instead of 32 psi as specified in the owners manual.

I purchased Hankook Optima Plus II V-rated 225-50-17 all-season tires. They are exclusively sold through PepBoys stores only. I purchased all 4 mounted and balanced out the door for $513 and got a $50 gas card in the mail.

These things have a 60,000 mile warranty through Hankook and so far have been a great purchase. Tread pattern is nothing to talk about, they are not directional and have a standard tread design, but they grab well, and I've ran them in the rain and some below 30 degree weather and they seem to do well. I drive mostly highway miles so I've already put over 1000 miles on them in less than a month.

Looking forward to testing them in the snow.

By the way, you probably won't find these tires in any of the above searches unless I posted something about them earlier and forgot. They are a more recently released tire.

However, if you are sure you only want one set of tires year round... the only all-season tires I have read that perform like snow tires in the snow are the Nokian WRs.

Yeah after I posted this I started looking. I just dont want to spend 800 on a new set of tires but want the best tire I can get.

If you are going for the Ziex 512s, print out a page from EdgeRacing.com and take it to Sears Auto. They price match. Get them to mount and align everything, probably under 450-500 bucks. My friend with a Spec-V got that setup and cost him a little over 400. We have wider sizes, so it'll be a bit more.

 

I bought the Mich Pilot Sport A/S's for almost $1k and wouldn't do it again. This is my DD and it doesn't need that much tire. My ex put BFG Traction T/A's on her WRX and they seem to be pretty good, but I don't see it for the stock tire size. They aren't all seasons, but for half the price I would check out the BFG g-Force Sport.

Ziex 512's last maybe 20-25k if your lucky. After that they suck the donkey's a$$. Hydro-plane hell!!!

I had both the V-rated and H-rated and the V-rated actually lasted longer. Go figure ???

I forgot to mention the TOYO Proxes 4's as well.....seems to be a well-liked tire here among the .org'ers, but they were too stiff in the sidewall for my needs, and again - not available locally.

 

I am gonna go with the Yoko Avid V4's after my research and hearing some bad things about the Falkens

 

I just got a set of (4) yoko avid yk250 from discount tire and spent under 550 and i love them i have driven them in snow and rain already. the snow was between 3-5 inches. I didnt measure it, nut thats what the weather channel said. and they couldnt performed better. they grabbed right away and were solid on the highway above 80

I already tried the Falken Ziex 512 and they lasted about 25k miles. I don't recommend them although the traction on wet roads was good. I researched the Yokohamas Avid V4 and found them at www.mavistire.com for $107.00 not including shipping. I ordered a set of 4 and it took about 4 business days to reach my house. The treadwear rating is 500 which means that they will last twice as long as a tire with a rating of 250 (probably about 50k miles depending on tire pressure, wheel alignment, etc.). So far besides Michelins, these are the best tires that I have tried so far. I'm also running on the stock 17" rims so you shouldn't have any problem ordering them in 225/50/17. They are also unidirectional tires with a AA traction rating which is the best in the industry. My 2 cents.

but i just put 20" rims on the car. the tires are 255/35/ZR20

but it rubs when i make a turns. whats the good siz for 20" rims? that it wont rub no more??

you can get oem stock rims on ebay usually, also check craigslist. there are companies which sell re-man'ed rims for about $200-300. however, for about $400, you can find the set being sold on ebay - and they sell for as low as $200.

on craigslist, sometimes people sell them for $100-200 to hedge their costs on doing an upgrade - they think of getting the stock rims "for free" when buying the car.

 

What ever you do there are three to stay away from Federal, Nexen and Maxxis, these all have horrible tracktion and wear out fast. if you dont need tires right away then save another month and get a set of Toyo P4's or Falken zexius. If you need them ASAP then go for the Hankook Ventus K-104, or if you can track down a set of Toyo FZ4's. They are a discontinued tire because they came out with the P4, but if you can find a set they are usually discounted.
