spare tire

Has anyone replaced their spare tire with a full size steelie??? Maybe a 15" or 16" that will fit in the trunk like the spare and sit flush? Im tired of riding on the lil donut when my tire goes out and I always have to wait for discount tire to order my tire from the warehouse which puts me 2 or 3 days out

Yo I have a full size spare, and it doesn't sit as flush with it in there, but it does fit!! It isn't that bad.....I don't like like donuts either!!

my spare is a full-size (one of my 17x8 track wheels with shaved Hankook RS2 on it). I have to carry it because no mini-spare will clear my z32 calipers and 12" rotors. Otherwise I'd just carry a mini.

It does stick up. I actually fabbed up a new trunk floor that goes over it all the way across and makes it all flat again....

After I got my G35 18's, I took one of the 16's and put it in the trunk. Like irish, my new "spare" sticks up about 1.5"-2". It'd be a nice idea to just make a new wood floor to account for the height, but I haven't bothered to.

I was thinking of doing this - but then the extra weight = slower/more gas so I decided the occasional flat that happens could suffice with a donut.

I recently slid into a curb, causing much damage to my suspension and scraping my OEM alloy wheel badly. I had the damage repaired at a shop my insurance company recommended. When they did the work, they replaced my wheel, but left my damaged wheel in the trunk. I thought it would be bent, but it looks like there is only superficial scrapes on the face. I plan to put one of my tires on it when I get a new set (soon) and leave it in the garage. If I get a flat, I can mount the donut til I get home, then put on the full size spare until I decide when to get the tire replaced.

Do it, do it, do it.

I've gotten flats twice. The donuts suck and are only good for 55 MPH.I have a VERY hard time keeping below that.
I riding back on the skinny POS and every time I'd look down at the speedo I'm over. Blowing out the donut would really leave me up the creek.

Got a steel from Tire Rack for $40 I think and put a worn (but not worn-out) tire I had on it. No it doesn't fit exactly - the liner bulges some - but it's really fine.

Extra weight - sure, but how much? Can't be much of a difference.Probably wouldn't even show up in MPG.

I think donuts are popular with the auto companies because they take up less room - and mostly because they cost them less.

All it takes is one flat - especially when you're a long way from help or it's late and everything is closed and you have lots of highway driving involved - for you to be glad you have a "real' spare.

That happend to me in my other car but that's a long and sad story for another day. (I have a real spare for that car too.)
