Tire Recommendation for track use

I went to the track this weekend for the first time and got some runs in. I can't skip the water box so I had to heat up my toyo proxes4 and I don't want to do that.

I'm looking to purchase some new tires just for the racetrack. Someone recommended slicks, but I do have to drive there. Or I could go with some drag radials.

Which is the most prefer when it comes to the manufacture slicks or radials?

Maybe I can get someone to go with me and carry my tires.

Also I was thinking of purchasing a new set of wheels, some lightweight 17's to go with the new tires. I chose 17's to have enough clearance to do the BBK.

no input?

I'm kinda leaning towards drag radial. I'm not sure if the track would let me do street stock with slicks.

I searched for a couple of radials, do you guys have any experience with them?

I have a set of the BFGs 255/50/16 mounted on 16x7.5" ASA JS5's. They are my street workhorses, but I overpower them on the strip - they won't hold nearly as well as the M&Hs. Slicks are always better. I think the NHRA rules allow slicks in street classes as of last year, but as always, it's up to the track.

If you're in the high 13's, they should do OK for you - but they don't hold with a lot of power applied.

"drag tires" are for the drag strip

"track tires" are for the track

If you call tire place and ask for "track tires" you will end up with tires for this kind of track:

just sayin'........

Funny - when I go to the "track", it's to a drag strip - and I go there a lot....... Ah, the English language...

And TireRack calls the BFGs a "track" tire - from their web pages:

"
Track & Competition DOT

g-Force T/A Drag Radial

g-Force T/A Drag Radial "

Oh, well, going "to the track" is always a good thing...

Stop pickin on the poor guy. At least until the day when more Maxima's run open tracks than dragstrips. Oh, that'll probably be a while. Nevermind. Flame on.

I guess I should have payed more attention to the words I typed.

I guess some drag radials would be the way to go, I can switch tires in my garage and head for the Drag Strip.

I just got back from having my tires balance and aligned, after the Drag Strip and doing burnouts my cars was pulling to one side.

point taken....I just wouldn't want him buying R-comps labeled as "competition" or "track" tires....they wouldn't be very good for drag

And I know Hoosier makes lots of drag tires and slicks, but I've seen Hoosier alphalt "track" tires on eBay, and I saw lots of them on cars at the 2005 SCCA Solo Finals in Topeka, and trailers full of them in the pits.

So if you ask Hoosier for a track tire, what do you get?

And of course Goodyear has track tires for every occasion - and type of track...

Confusing.....

Any Hoosier dealer like Mid-Atlantic (who's trailer you saw) will bring only tires suited for that event and series. Drag slicks for NHRA, D.O.T. track radials for SCCA autocross, bias/radial slicks for PCA open track, etc.
