Hey guys,

I just wanted to know if there is any way to fit 255 wide tires on the stock 6th gen rims(7.5in wide)? It seems to be a little cheaper when choosing 255 vs 245 and I wanna put somethin wider on without having to go all out and changing the wheels. I'm a college student so I dont have the finance for that.

In general a 255 is larger than I would suggest for a 7.5" wheel. I would suggest 255s for a 8.5" or 9" wheel. Go on www.tirerack.com and look at the "specs" they will show the suggested wheel widths for various tire sizes.

 

Without knowing the series he's looking at, 255/45R18s are spec'ed 8-9.5 inches and 255/40R18 spec'ed 8.5-10 inches, so this latter size is out of the question. I'd consider the 255/45 but he's got to keep in mind that it's 0.5 inch off spec (i.e., a specification, not a "suggestion". Some tire manufacturers also call it "approved rim sizes").

 

hmmm I tried to search on tirerack but I wasnt able to find info about tire size per wheel width. But yea I guess I shouldve mentioned that I want it to be 255/45/18 or whatever series tire possible no less than 35 or no more than 55 i guess.

 

255/45-18, should fit without any issues, almost the same as 245/48-18

 

I thought OEM SE 18 where 8 inches wide

You're just playing dangerous with a 255 on a 7.5

ya i've tried googling about this and didnt find anyone who has 255s on a 18x7.5 I actually dont think I even saw anyone with 245s.

But just curious, you guys are saying stay "safe", what exactly do u mean? what is it that can go wrong?

 

tire can somehow debead under hard cornering since it'll be distorted more than it was designed for... then you go straight to the guard rail/bushes/trees/cliff.

For tires to perform properly they need to be supported properly. You will get the best performance from your tires if they are matched to the wheels. I try and keep tire width no more than 1.5" wider than the wheel. So I would not run a tire any wider than 9" on a 7.5" wheel. I don't know what tire was stock but 225s are the correct size for a 7.5" wheel

To give you an idea, I run 235's on an 8" wide rim....

A 7.5" rim really should use a 235 or 245 at very most. Definitely not 255s.

 

handling will be worse, actually. Once the sidewall angles start to go "outward' from the rim edge (as opposed to straight up and down), that means you are sacrificing the structural strength of the sidewall to some extent.

255s might have a little more traction, but assuming, say, an 8" wide rim...the 245s will have more resposive handling.

One of the oft-followed thoughts in autocross is that you put the widest rim you can on the car, and then put the narrowest tire that is within spec for that rim width on the rim.....for the most responsive handling.

 

hmm, thanks for all the answers guys, they've been really helpful. So I think i will stick to the factory spec of 245s on my next tire purchase unless I get wider wheels.

just like I have a 245/35/20 and my next set of tires I want something like a 255/45/20 or a 255/50/20. I want a biiger side wall for one to protect my rims , second to have a bigger side wall which will give a better ride and with more sidewall to flex better traction.

 

what do you guys think about 225.45.17's on the stock evo ix mr bbs rims? think it'll fit good?

 

whats the width? Should be fine considering its a 225, and i believe they come with 225's stock. I know the STI uses 225/45/17. It all depends on width and offset, i dont know the offset or width on those, but i think it will look good tho!
