Largest tire on 17" rim (PICS PLEASE!)
Largest tire on 17" rim (PICS PLEASE!)
I'm starting to browse wheels for the maxima and I think I want a set of 17's so I can still run some substantial rubber. My question is this: On a standard 17x7" or 17x8" 35-40 offset rim, what is the biggest tire (tallest and widest) I can run without rubbing/minimal contact with body/suspension parts? If anyone can post pics of their setup that would be excellent. I'm probably gonna be on S-Tech springs as well.
I'd like to see pics of all 17" wheels on lowered maximas, please post specs as well (wheel size/tire brand and make/tire size/offset)

IIRC a 17x8 wheel on our car should not have a tire bigger than 235/45/17 tire. That doesn't mean you can't get more but it is encouraged.
17x7 shouldn't go more than 225/45/17. again that doesn't mean you can't but it is not encouraged.
I'm running that setup right now with no problems. As what others have already stated, you can do it but would encourage otherwise.
If I remembered correctly, the 235/45/17 was very close to RPM difference to our stock setup. 225/50/17 was off by more.

Guys, the difference b/w the 225 45 17 and the 235 45 17 is the width (of course) and less than 1/2" height. The 235/45/17 is like 25.4" tall and the 225/45/17 is 25." Is this really gonna make a big difference in the "efficient rate" my car runs at? The factory 215/60/15 is 25.2" tall. Something to think about. I am gonna run 235/45/17 if I can get them on the wheels, thats my only concern.
I got those numbers from using the same brand and model tire for all three sizes, and using the same manufacturer's specs on width and height.

235/45/17's here too on 17x7's with a 40 offset. The shop may try to steer you against it because its " not recommended because it could rub" But they are just trying to cover their butts. I have 235/45's on my 17x7's and no rubbing. I have the Tokico Illumina suspension kit.
Hey,
There is a guy parting out new 275/40/17's very cheap.I mean less than what one retails for. This is a real "fire sale".i know the guy is legit and they're not "hot".
Will they fit on my 5th gen 2002 Maxima? It doesn't sound like it would fit? Wont fit the stock SE wheels right?
Thanks
Bob

I like 275s I've run them on the Maxima and use them on my Z32. You can't run them on stock wheels 9" min size. I could be a player in cheap 275s

275 race tires

255 front and 275 rear staggered setup.
yea 235-45-17 is what tirerack recommends for a 17x7 wheel
but i have a feeling thats because the 235-45-17 tire is far more common, and thus cheaper to get, than the random size of 215-50-17
i actually just bought 4 '04 maxima SL alloys that are 17x7
i was deciding which way to go as far as tires....
my two choices are:
235-45-17 (speedo offset of %0.67)
or
215-50-17 (speedo offset of %0.12)
my first instinct is to go with the 215-50-17 simply because of the sidewall height. the roads here are bad, plus there are lots of traintracks.
the downside to these is the width - i want wider tires a) cuz they look better and b) cuz u get better traction (more surface area = better grip)
plus, these are random weird sized tires, so if i ever got wider rims i would have to get new tires as well....
so the 235-45-17s, obviously are going to be too thin for my liking. other than that, and the perks of a wider tire, is that ill be able to swap them off if i were ever to get wider rims down the road (17x7.5, 17x8, etc.)
plus i think the 235s are goign to LOOK too wide for a 7 inch wide wheel. i got 225s on there now and they hang off the sides a good amount...i think 235 would be over the top
i dunno tho, all input appreciated

well the 215-50-17 and the 235-45-17 are the two closest to stock diameter for me...
225-50-17 would be a 1.4% speed diff (too slow) with a .36 inch larger difference in overall diameter
225-45-17 would be a 2.05% speed diff (too fast) with a .52 inch smaller difference in diameter
225-50-17 would be a 1.4% speed diff (too slow) with a .36 inch larger difference in overall diameter
225-45-17 would be a 2.05% speed diff (too fast) with a .52 inch smaller difference in diameter
On a car with traction control like the 350Z or something similar I might stress more on overall diameter but fit is more important to me. Also, different tires of the same diameter can vary in total outer diameter and revs/mile so those small differences could be even smaller.
What tire size are you putting in the stock size on the tire calculators?
On miata.net tire calc.:
Using 215/55r16 as stock, that makes 235/45r17 only off by 1%, 60mph=60mph.
Using 215/60r15 as stock, that makes 235/45r17 only off by .7%, 60mph=60.4mph.
Using 205/65r15 as stock, that makes 235/45r17 only off by .6%, 60mph=59.6mph.
You'll actually have a bigger sidewall, .2 inch, if you use 235/45 as opposed to 225/45.
Sidewall size is the same (4.2inches) on 215/50 and 235/45.
max95q is using 235/45r17 on 17x7 wheels and it looks great to me. I plan on doing the same thing.
Anyway, hope that helps some.

Personally I think 225/50-17 has the right mix of everything you want. Rule of thumb is within 3% of speedo anyway. Do you really cruise right at 55 or whatever the posted limit is? In any part of the country I have been in that gets you rear-ended.
