Chime in About My Tire Choice

Alright, once the snow melts the Maxima needs a new set of meats...Its 2K3 SE 17's currently have 225/50 rubber on them in the form of Hankook HR Ventus II tires. They have been very good to me and I currently plan to replace them with the exact same thing.

So my requirements are: summer performance-oriented tires, 225/50 size, good dry and wet performance, and try to limit them to $120 a piece. For reference, I paid $105-110 for my current tires at a shop, although I found them online for $86 a piece...And yes, I know, it will cost a few bucks to have them mounted and balanced. Got a tire I should check out, let's hear it...

I'd take a look at the Kumho SPT and the BFG G-force sport, the Falken 912s might be worth a look. The G-force sports would be my pick for pure performance.

I had those same tires on my 03 se rims. Now have General Exclaim UHP 225/50/17. Go to tirerack.com. Got them for $89 a piece and shipped to me in 2days. They have a pretty aggresive tread and are worth checking out if you want a decent summer tire.

Good Luck

Hmm...all good choices. Any additional thoughts on those different brands? A couple are $10 more each. Not a huge deal, but 40 bucks nonetheless.

How would you compare the two brands?

Also, judging on nothing but looking at the tires online, I have to say I like the Kumho's...The only problem is they don't make them in 225/50R17, only 225/45...

Potenza RE960AS Pole Position best tires I've owned. You'd love em. Quiet, very grippy, and stiff sidewalls.............

My kumho SPT is quite grippy and the pretty looking treads do channel water out very effectively. And I must say I no longer fear the rain now Noise level is quite okay IMO and treadwear is excellent.
But like you said... they dont come in 225/50.

i cant say from experience, but virutally every review of GENERAL EXCLAIM UHP tires is glowing. all over the internet they are regarded as one of the best bang-for-your-buck tires available.

they are rougly 80-90 a piece, depending on size.

Tire rack now has them in that size! I'm definitely leaning towards the Kumhos right now.

They look like good tires, but the price is a little steep ($171 each).

x2

I have had both the Proxes4 and the SPTs currently...I love them both, but I think the Proxes has the edge in the rain...very close though, can't go wrong with either for the money...

Only reason why I didn't have the Proxes now was because I got the SPTs in 245/40/18 for 350

I paid 148.00 ea from the tire rack for mine.....If you check the reviews you'll see how much praise these tires receive. I couldn't believe a tire could be this quiet, this grippy in wet and pretty good in snow, yet have a nice stiff sidewall...........I'd buy another set in a minute even at 171.00 ea. Only dislike is they don't look very aggressive

Too much coin for an unemployed college student. Plus, I don't need them to go thru snow.

For specifically a summer tire (all year in Florida ) I absolutely LOVE my new tires.

Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....+Pole+Position

Pro's:
GREAT Dry performance and awesome wet too... I have yet to lose traction braking or hydroplane.

The sidewalls are ridiculously stiff so I haven't even heard a chirp or howl when cornering very sharp with stock suspension. ABS Always works perfect with them, never ever slid even when I romp the brake pedal to test them out. Lightly modded VE-auto can barely brake them lose taking off.

Cons:
I suppose some people might think rough ride quality would be a bad thing so I guess I should put that in here, but I tend to like the "riding on a skateboard" feel going over bumps and things. They're by no means that comfortable of a tire, but they are surprisingly quiet for how the ride is... But if you want a performance summer tire, you're apparently going to lose some ride quality; but I'm sure you know that.

Not even close to my size.

... That is strange, I don't have either of those sizes... and I've seen people with 17's have them.

Might just be a tirerack thing

I do believe this particular tire is no longer produced (closeout), so that might explain the now limited size choices.

S03s were designed with wet traction as a primary concern. S02s were designed more for dry pavement IIRC.

But they are both great tires if you can swing the coin
