optimal offsets?

my head is spinning from all the threads and posts i've just read on wheel offset. it still throws me for a loop every now and then! anyway, regarding the 4th gen, is there an ideal offset that will offer the best look and proper handling? it seems that most of what i came across suggested that an offset of +40 is acceptable. is there a range of offsets that are a good guideline? are there offsets that should be avoided or are less desireable? i understand that wheel width plays a factor as well; i'm just looking for a good guideline to go by. thanks in advance.

in order for the fronts and rears to be flush and not going staggered, you will need a 15mm spacer for the rear and about a 5mm for the fronts. This is assuming +40 & 8" wide.

instead of looking for the answer to a generic question, i would suggest reading up on wheel construction and what all the numbers mean. once you really understand it its the simplest of math.
