Poll! need LIGHTWEIGHT tires! yokohama s.drive, kumho ecsta mx, general exclaim?

The title says it...I am looking for LIGHT summer tires that PERFORM. 255/40-17 or 245/40-17. I was gonna get some falken rt-615s but they're about 26 lbs. I'm looking for 24lbs or under.

I just got a set of 17x9 5zigen fn01r-c wheels and they ended up being about 2lbs heavier than I expected. Weight isn't a HUGE deal...but if I shave a pound or two then at least this combo won't weigh anymore than my current 225/45-17s.

The yokohama s.drive caught my eye with it's 24lb weight (245/40-17), good reviews on tirerack and $119. It seems to have good manners (low noise, bumpy) and people say it performs well.

I'm also looking at the kumho ecsta mx (245/40-17)which is 23 lbs. $125. It has good ratings and is an "extreme performance" tire, i just don't know about kumho....

Then there's the General Exclaim UHP. Again, another brand I don't see as a performance tire brand...but everyone seems to LOVE these things. They're also 23 lbs and are only $91! The tread pattern looks like I should go mudding with these things though!?!

I'm constantly pushing my tires to the limit. so again, i need light tires that perform wet and dry. comfort and low noise is a plus.

Which ones should I get? If you have other recommendations, let me know!

Thanks for the help!

What about toyo proxes 4 or toyo t1r?

T1r is only 22 pounds and I've heard good things about it...?

proxes4 does well in wet&dry traction; overall very good but if T1R is in the mix, I'd go T1R's.

T1R's are one of the best I've ever had. On a nice hot day, you can feel the mushiness of the soft compound sticking you too the road. (It's a good thing)

T1Rs are damn light tires, although the sidewall is a bit soft they are still light as fawk and good performers.

How heavy were the FN01RCs? 19-20lbs?

I saw on a website 17lbs.
5zigen told me approx. 18.5lbs.
My scale shows 20lbs.

My scale is probably off, but in relation to my current combination on the same scale, I need tires <24lbs to break even. so 22 or 23lb tires would be the shiznit.

I'm really leaning towards the T1Rs.
Can anyone compare the T1Rs to the BFG KDW2s that I have now?

Well, so much for my plans. RP-F1 FTW.

Yeah--they're lighter.

Since the tire's average distance from the axis of rotation is so much greater than the wheel, it is actually a greater deciding factor in the moment of inertia. You might still improve the moment of inertia of the whole system even if your scale may not show it.

According to Edgeracing the T1R is 22.3lbs in 245/40 and 23.1lbs in 255/40. I'd get 255/40s if I were you, although 245/40s will be more responsive and gear you down just a tiny bit more. The 255s are already reducing rolling diameter, and I think 245/40s just wouldn't look right.

I was gonna get a set of those...but they don't have a hyper black color. Well, 5zigen phased that color out too, but I got lucky and found a set that JLB motorsports had in stock. They gave me a good deal too!

Good point, didn't think about that...

That's another thing I've been thinking about. I was gonna go with the 245 because of the lighter weight and it would gear me down a bit, like you said. But, I aggree, it would probably look goofy. Also, I think the 255 would be a bit more comfortable on these sh*tty roads in my area. Since the 255s are still only 23 lbs...I might just have to go that route.

Also, have you dealt with edgeracing before? They seem to have good deals, a nice selection, and lots of specs about their tires. Think this is the best place to pick up some T1Rs?

It really all depends on what your priorities are. I ran around with 245/45/16s for quite awhile and it looked alright but those were 16s, and you could still kind of see the goofiness factor if you looked at it. I went up to 245/50s, crappier stance IMO but from the side the car looks better, it has less wheel gap without slamming the car to the ground and it has more clearance.

Also, have you dealt with edgeracing before? They seem to have good deals, a nice selection, and lots of specs about their tires. Think this is the best place to pick up some T1Rs?
They are great to deal with, I ordered my set of T1Rs, Hankook RS2s and even my current set of Falken 912s from them. They'll probably be who I order my next set of wheels from.

I vote NT03+M. The rpf-1 is sweet, but it just makes a 17" look smaller than it is.

and how ridiculous will this sizing be?

Too damn heavy IMO, yeah the RP-F1s have a little "radial lip" on them but they still look great if you get 'em with flat spokes.

Plus I haven't seen any flat-spoked RPs on a 4th gen.

Just ordered a set of Toyo T1R's

255/40-17's will be mounted on 17x9 fn01rc's all the way around...

I ordered from edgeracing. Since they have a sale right now, I got them for just under $600 shipped.

Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

I never understood getting wider wheels in the rear of a FWD vehicle...am I missing something?

Why not just use spacers in the back....then you can rotate the wheels front to back for more even tire wear AND you don't create MORE understeer. Is my logic flawed?

and yeah...what DID you buy?!

It looks cool

Seriously, that's the only reason... maybe to dial in more gross amounts of understeer

Edit: also you can fit wider wheels/tires in the rear, but I still don't see a good reason to do so

Spacers are kind of but they still > having 2x the understeer

You saying you couldn't swing the cool G for RPF1s but you got 19s? I hope you got a killer deal on 'em... guess I am just going to have to be the pioneer of RPF1s on the A32 when I decide to move on from the Z32s

Well, besides top element *** or so I have heard

LOL lets not go there with THAT business again with TE.. (tapioca express right? i like boba)

well they ARE pretty damn inexpensive ~1200 picked up for the RPF1 18x8.5 +30 18.9.5 +15. you know me and the staggered application on a fwd car. the NT03+M (~$1150 picked up) were slightly heavier by 3lbs (21lb) with the 18x9.5 +27 18x10.5 +30.

yeah man the 19s were a solid g. cant forget tires which are another 500 bones. its gonna look pimp no matter what. understeer wont be so bad when you run close to the same size tire all around... massive stretch in rear = teh pure sex

how stretched are we talking on the rear? 235? 245?

can't wait to see it...I'm sure it will be hotttt

still no rotating tho

and if you stretch the rear alot, breakaway at the limit will be less progressive. o well, there's no way any oversteer will come out of that setup.

its not like im tracking my car anyways but i will have to relearn the limits with this different setup. stock wheels/tire setup isnt bad at all 215/60 RE950s hold up fairly nicely... i can feel that oversteer tho.

i know im alittle late , and from the dark side , but back in the day my best 1.9 60' s came from the toyo T1-S 235/45/17 and i ran the SSR comp 17/8s rotational mass is one of the best things we FWD guys can do , wonder why there arent any carbon fiber wheels and or tires.
