just ordered 225/55/17 for my 2002 GLE

Placed an order for the new Yokohamas Invigor, I know that the 225 is a little taller and my speedo will be off but I am fine with that. I think the taller sidewall will make the ride a little softer and will fill out the wheelwells a little better.

I will report back after I get them put on and put 1k miles on them, can't really compare to anything since right now I am driving on bald Kumho Ecstas.

If anyone has pics of 225/55/17 on their GLE post them up, I wanna see how it looks versus the stock 215s.

Interesting. I have the 225/50R17's stock and the Bridestones are bald. Been looking at possibly a 235/50R17 or maybe even a 245/50R17. Right now, Mr. Tire stores here are offering select Yokohama buy 3 get 1 free, and the ENVigor is one of the selections. Can't wait to hear your opinion on these tires, but would also like to hear opinions from anybody that has ran a 245 on a stock offset wheel. Will it fit without rubbing, etc.... I'd like something a touch taller and a touch wider. I want to lower the front with some H & R's when I get some extra money, will they rub if the front comes down an inch or so?

I think our wheels are not the same in width, I know that 02/03 SE wheels are 7.5 inches in width but GLE wheels are 7 inches. If mine were 7.5 inches I would have went with a 235/50 tire.

As far as rubbing I really think you can use a straight edge or just eyeball it, a 245 will be 1cm closer to the fender then a 225.

I thought the wheel weight thread said that the 02-03 SE wheels were 17x7? Is it 7.5?

In any case, my '02 SE came with 245/45 on stock SE wheels. They fit fine and, in my opinion, look really sharp. (Who dislikes a fat tire?) I have no idea what they have done to the speedometer, I don't have easy access to a GPS system to check its accuracy.

You might be right, I guess I assumed they're wider then GLE wheels since they come stock with 225 tires while the GLE comes with 215 tires.

Going from 225/50 to 245/45 is perfect in terms of wheel circumference, the difference is .7%.

My GPS shows that with 225/50/17s my speedometer reads 2 mph slow at 70, meaning I am actually going 72. With 225/45/17s, it reads 1 mph fast at 70, which means I am really going 69. Of course, since there is no standard height for tires between manufacturers even with the same labeled size, your results may vary wildly!

Isnt there also a permissable margin of error regarding the accuracy of the factory speedometers? I didnt do the math but what's that...a 3% error or something? Not terrible, IMO.

VW speedometers read real high compared to actual speed. The only standards there are with regards to accuracy is with certified speedometers in cop cars.

BTW, with Falken ZE-912 225/50/17s, for every 100 miles the odometer showed, my GPS showed 104. With the Bridgestone RE050 225/45/17s, for every 100 miles traveled, the GPS showed 99.7.

I got them put on today, only drove 10 miles so no review yet...they are quieter then worn out Kumhos and fill out the wheel-well better.
